You can download varios distro's of linux - so long as you can download an ISO image, they're as free as the CD you need to burn them onto. :)

I've had redhat linux running on a p200 before - don't expect any amazing graphical user interface performance, but if you just want a server with a command line - than the p200's gonna be fine to start out with.

If you've got a spare hard disk that you dont mind using just for linux, then great - don't even need to format it, just have it in the box and connected up.. the linux installers should do the rest, just specify that you want linux to use all the space on the drive.

You'll be asked to install lots of suplimentary 'packages' .. you're better off just going with the defaults for the first time. Expect to reinstall a few times, or at least.. I did, trying to figure out where I was at :D If you feel happier using a book insted of a webpage, then I'm sure your local library is bound to have some sort of linux book.. dosent matter if its a few years old, it'll still be good to get you accustomed with the fundamental commands etc.

That said, I'm deffo no pro myself.. :D

If you're after a linux distro to use as a server, Debian is one of the best out there. Be warned however that it's not the easiest distro - the installer is a bit of a bitch. Once installed though, it's gloriously stable and powerful, and the "apt-get" system means you can install almost any software easily without having to compile if from source code.

You can download a 10Mb bootable CD image from the URL below; get the bootbf2.4 image. Debian will get the rest of the packages it needs directly from the net when it's installed.

    http://people.debian.org/~dwhedon/boot-floppies/

Any Linux install will take care of partitioning the disk during the install process, you won't need to do that manually.

If you're keen on using Debian, try RedHat8 instead - it's less server-oriented than Debian, but it does offer a much easier installer. From past experience I'd avoid Mandrake completely.

If you've got any further questions, ask! :)

    Cheers

It should run fine on the P200, but as Moose said, don't expect amazing speed! As for the club, you do not need to join it. There is a link that says "I'm already a member, or I am thinking of joining later" which you can use to access the download pages.
I have using Mandrake 9 since it first came out, and have not had any difficulties with yet. And yes, if you don't like it, you can use yer Win boot disk to format the drive, then re-install windows.

I've found the best place to download Linux ISOs is http://www.linuxiso.org/
Its totally free, has loads of distros, and provides links to mirrors (directly to the ISO).

Well people have given a lot of good advice already, but I'll just say my two bits:

I personally like Redhat, it's easy to use, and as powerful as a train. That being said, use Redhat 7.3! I used 8.0 and nearly vomited. It is extremely annoying to use and for someone who's used to Linux, was completely buggered up and everything was no where.. and GAH. I was never in the GUI, as I couldn't find anything, and it was ugly as hell, I spent about ten minutes and only managed to find Konsole.

Also, since this is your first experience with Linux, expect to re-install A LOT. My first day I installed Redhat 7.2 I had to re-install eight times that day. The next wasn't quite so bad with only six, and then a few days later I had to install it again. The best advice I can give you is to check out those websites, along www.linux.org but otherwise, just crack it open and start going through it, fiddle with it, play with it, break it, re-install it, then rinse and repeat. The best way to learn Linux is to just dive in and start digging.

Well I hope that gives you a bit more insight.....

Welcome to Linux, Damn the man :D

Yeah, I've read a few reviews of RedHat 8 and they all say that bluecurve (the GUI) was a big mistake. Apparently KDE and Gnome are both unhappy with it too.

One of the beauties of the Debian installer is that you only end up reinstalling when it's *really* necessary, because the installer is so UGLY. It provides that little bit more incentive to fix things rather than reinstall. My current firewall/webserver box is my third Debian install, and it works like a dream.

I usually busted up my installs so bad GRUB would burst into flames, let alone let me boot into the OS and try to fix it.

Also, yeah, actually a KDE developer at Redhat actually resigned because of the exclusion of KDE in the new Redhat version. Which is why you don't install it, instead you download the KDE source and install that instead, but being the first time for Linux, that's a little more advanced than he probably wants to worry about.

Another distro I've heard good things about is Gentoo Linux. Never tried it myself but I'd like to, sounds like a good one.

Unfortunately right now I'm stuck in Windows..... :waah:

    What distro you grabbing?

I doubt you'll need the international, that sounds kinda like just extra language support and such, and the extras might be good to get. There should be a listing of what all is on each CD, so just look at that to see if you need (or post a link so someone who knows more can see if you need it if you don't know what it's listing)

Also, what connection are you on? Dial up?

EDIT: Find a better mirror, you can usually find ones capable of letting you go 80-100k/sec assuming your connection cna go that fast...

Hmm.. Mandrake's website doesn't seem to be really any help... I would recommend you just download all of them, as it's better to blow a CD than to get part way through th installation and not have a CD it asks for.
