How much RAM do you have in the 200, and what size HD(s)?

If you were to do an expert install of Mandrake then it will ask you which disks you have. Obviously if you tell it you only have one, it should (not tried it so don't flame me) just connect to internet and download anything else it needs automatically. But like Kargin said, best to have all the disks as you will probably need to re-install a couple of times when you bugger it up!

The Debian installer CD I use is about 10Megs. Everything else that's needed is installed from the net during the install process, and it doesn't take that long to do a minimal install of the OS. From there you can just add packages as they're needed. Admittedly though, I'm on cable and that does make life a lot easier :)

Make sure when your downloading teh ISOs that you dwnload them in binary mode, if you download them into ASCII mode they will corrupt, which is why you would have pooched so many CDs. Your using an FTP client I hope, not just IE or similar? Make sure your FTP client is set to downlaod them as binary. I'm sorry but I don't know how to do this, but just check your help files as it should say. I know I use FlashFXP which has binary set automatically.

    Yeah, that's it.

You should be able to download them and burn them no problem with Nero, which is what I use, and believe me, I've burned plenty of Linux distros in my time.........

Have fun with it dude :hip:

When you tell Nero to burn an image, it looks for a specific type of file *.NIM? or something (dunno exact coz I don't use it). You need to change the type to *All files, then select your new ISO image. it should then burn the disk for you. Hope this helps!

If you have one, just stick in a Windows boot disk, and then run the CD from there, obviously you have to have a Windows boot disk that will allow you to prompt into a CD supported DOS mode.

Then just run the setup from there.

Hope that help you. Good luck.

EDIT: Go into your BIOS and make sure it's set to check for booting off the CD.......:D

And the BIOS doesn't have a CD option in the boot sequence?

What is the listing of all the files on the CD? Maybe it's somehting not to obvious?

Can you network computers together? Maybe run the install over network? I don't know... Put the HDD in anew computer, install it, then swap theh HDD into the p200.... Linux would most likely scream a fury more unholy than the darkest reachest of Hell, but it could work. Just make sure Kudzu runs on boot up......

EDIT: Your probably looking for a file called autoboot.bat or similar, if there is a directory called dosutils, look in there. And by listing, I mean exclude the folders that have the packages in them.

Glad you could solve the problem without your first Linux experience being a flaming pile scrap metal.

Also I have not the MSN, last time I tried getting that thing working it didn't go well. I only use email and ICQ, as you can see in my sig;)

Good luck with getitng the HDD and RAM in place and getting that baby up and running.

Yeah no I meant take the old HDD in the p200 and put it into a new computer (swap out HDDs) and then instal, then put the HDD back into the p200.

Also just a further warning, I don't know about Debian, but whatever you do, make sure that THAT COMPUTER DOES NOT LOSE POWER. If Linux doesn't shut down properly (loss of power, you hit the power button to turn it off without it going through the shutdown procedure, etc) you stand a good chance of killing your installation. Like I said though, most newer distros don't suffer from that problem, but it's best to avoid it anywayz.

Also yeah, I would recommend not going dual boot, unless the other OS is Windows 98 ona FAT32 partition, Linux will devour it's soul.

    Well good luck.
