    GWD Text editor

A really handy tool for coding HTML, JAVA, ASP, PHP etc... does the colour coding and you can download new programming language packs for it, so it can colour code them too.

good good, the list is progressing...i've seen a few bits n pieces that i should get...

...everyone is on the right track...and yes, please list software you use to replace standard Windows apps (like that Notepad thing i saw listed (can't remember the name!?))

    Thought some more:

    DivX Codec + The Playa
    WinRar
    3DMark (duh!)
    Direct Connect
    Soulseek
    SmartFTP
RealPlayer (hate this thing, but some people still insist encoding their streaming audio/video in this format)
    Quicktime
    CoffeeCup HTML Editor

Even though I have XP, I much prefere the power/options of WinRar/Winzip...

perhaps instead of names you should go for types...

Mp3 Player: Winamp, Music Match, Sonique my pref in that order(although MM Burns pretty good)

Internet Browser + FTP: IE, Netscape, Opera + cute(crippleware, at least the version I have), smart

Word Processor: Office is good but expensive, Corel WP Suite is also good

Image editing: Paint, PSP, although Photochop is better i think.

3d Modelling: Maya is good and free although I dont like the watermarks, I used one years ago by a company called vitrius(i think) called concept cad, worked on a p266 w.64 ram so...

Computer customizing: Tweak UI, Ultramon, etc, etc

    Communication: Trillian, Mirc, messenger

Media Player: WMP, ATI player, Real, etc

Spyware removal: adaware, Spybot S&d, etc...

for me music is a must:
    noteworthy composer,
    fruity loops 3,

Benchmarking proggie, IE sandra, 3d Mark, Pc mark
Seti/Folding/Distributed computing: After all you must sleep sometime...

Zip PRoggie: Alladin expander + winrar will unzip anything you can think of.

Divx + the playa, you be right my friend

Anyone who has posted to this thread should go back and make sure that their post contains hyperlinks to the software's website. Makes checking out someone's recommendations a lot easier :)

    My two cents:

VBSEdit - A fantastic editor for VB and ASP Scripts. $15US to regsiter.

PuTTY - Telnet and SSH client. Free.

Coolmon - System stats on your desktop.

I'd put in a vote for Motherboard Monitor, but it doesn't seem to like the Gigabyte motherboards :(

[Edit] Oooh, yeah, I forgot my fave program of the moment: Popfile - This thing is excellent at Bayesian email filtering. Mmmm.... bye bye spam :D [/Edit]

I'm amazed, nobody's mentioned Irfanview (free fast graphics viewer/converter).

Quickview Plus (often free old version on mags) - file viewer

LastChance (free) - runs programs (eg backup) on shutdown

XXCopy (free) - perfect for quick incremental backups.

Clipboard Magic (free) - C&P not once, but some.

    TEA - no-nags crossword/anagram solver. MANTICORE = ?

Transparent Icon text - several freeware

Exact Audio Copy - best ripper

Screen Ruler - measure them pixels, line stuff up.

Free Surfer - sorts out OE usenet threads.

ZoneAlarm - keep the baddies at bay

    Acrobat Reader, IE6, OE :naughty:

They can learn how google works :p

how could I forget a CD Ripper?!?

I use CDex - very good, simple but powerful (has many different encoders - ie, Lame, Ogg Vorbis etc)

Found a good alternative to DU Meter called Netmeter - and it's freeware :D

Pretty much exactly the same as DU Meter with a slightly different look.

    Available here

on the previous topic involving everyone needing a 3D modeler, one that i use is WINGS3D.... it's more of a fun tool than anything, but very powerful in the right (educated) hands

the best part is it's free

Word or some other equal program
Fireworks, in my opinion more useful to the "mass" than Photochop (some reasons: simplier, cheaper, ...)

Dreamweaver (or other program to fast create webpages)

    A popup-killer

    A mailchecker-program like the one I've made :p

edit: you may now laugh, but once you're used to the mailchecker program, you can't live without it anymore! It's addicting...I tell ya :p

A few that I haven't seen mentioned yet:

Crimson Editor - Free text editor with syntax files available for pretty much everything.
Mailwasher - Like the name says, free utility to check mail before you download it, has the option to bounce your mail which is dead handy with persistent spam.
Filzip - Free Zip utility (IMHO) better than WinZip.

Not read all of them, but my contributions. The listed will always be installed first thing upon a re-install of XP:

AVG 6381fu Free Edition (Or other AV software)
    Via 4in1s
    Other drivers + Refresh fix
WinRAR (so I can unzip the rest of the list :p)
Textpad (can't believe nobody said that already!)
    Winamp 2.X
CrazyBrowser (Or another browser other than IE)
    PS/PSP
    PowerDVD
    Nero
    CuteFTP Pro 2
    SSH Secure Shell Client
    Getright
    Sun's Java Virtual Machine
    Adobe Acrobat Reader
    DivX
    Real Player Lite }
Quick Time } Both just to get it out the way for later
    MS Office (Outlook)

    Apache
    PHP
    MySQL
    MySqlFront
    Oracle
    FTP ServU

The top list is what everyone should have. The second is more of a personal preference list.
