I made some Little tiny heatsyncs (old 486 sync cut in 4).. whare should I put them?..on the board or in the trash?

Also im a little confused, I hear people mentioning north and south bridges
I know the north bridge is the chip with the fan on it but whare is the south bridge?.. the via chip? is it worth cooling

    my mobo

The southbridge would be that chip marked VIA next to the IDE connectors. Considering you already cut up the heatsink, it is worth it to put it on the southbridge simply because you did most of the work already. As to whether or not it'd make a difference in anything, not likely. If you're overclocking maybe, but other that that there's not much to be had.

You might as well put the heatsink on the southbridge with some thermally conductive double sided tape or epoxy. And you are correct, the southbridge is the chip that says VIA on it. I forget which peripherals use the southbridge, mainly the pci bus i think...

That's great.... now stop spamming the forums

Yes , put it on the southbridge ... If for no other reasion than it looks good
You might cut up the other heatsink and put them on your power mosfets ( 6 small square chips next to the northbridge fan connector ) I hear it can add stability to your power (they get hot) and again , it looks good

I dont know about that heat sync but the color is most likely screwed up from your cutting job, a Healthy dose of oven cleaner will strip that and it can be polished to a mirror finish. :naughty:

Why not? and all the other mosfets too
I cut up some Alpha heatsinks from 1 Cool PC (45mmx45mm = $5.00) with an X-acto saw and put them on all the mosfets on the front and on the back of the motherboard too at the power mosfets (111*F ) and CPU socket

just put them on the eight voltage regulators (2 bottom right) (6 top middle)

they will help stabilise the voltage a little, but really it will do ****e all

no im not kidding you have to put a heatsync on the little battery aswell as that specific cap or your computer will explode. and dont forget the one on back or your computer may become a portal to the demon world.

ok.. It happens to be a rather old board im not sure if the board would be able to handle what im doing without some extra cooling...

*my 2500+ is drawing 70watts at normal speed when overclocked its going to draw 130-140 watts
+ im overclocking the Fsb from 166 to 183

im not sure the standard cooling is up for the task

Well on my p4 mobo I put in some small heatsinks on my voltage regulators and my oc went up about 3% and stability increase as well as voltage rates dont fluctuate anymore.

As far as the southbridge I would not bother unless your pci clock is higher than normal.

Also note that I did not use thermal compound on my litle heatsinks. I just used some crazy glue and they transfer heat pretty well.

    Just my two cent

yeah...crack, definately crack. don't listen to this joker, you could jack up your PC. do you have the parts yet to run the pc?? if so then i would recommend testing each of the chips with a temp probe or your finger (be very careful). then you will know which chips get hot and which don't. if you are going for looks and functionality then put the heatsinks on all of the chips and you will cover all of your bases. :thumb:

Yes , put them on all the chips that look like the ones you are allready thinking about putting them on ( they all look similar because they all do similar things , and get hot , especially the power regulator chips (111*F) that is why they are bent over and touching/soldered to motherboard )
It can't hurt and it looks good

It's funny, but not overly helpful (since some muppets will probably believe you)
