My GTX285 Matrix never goes over 75 degrees for more than a second or so, but I figure it just (is) increasing the fan to stop it doing that, if it ever goes to 76 it goes right back down.
Apologies gavomatic57 that was rude. The Fermi 480 is running at >90 degrees, fans at full pelt with a monster heatsink. If Artic cooling or Scythe can show Nvidia how to better cool their GFX cards on air then great but I fear there's not going to be much improvement.
i have an 480 soon but i am unlikely going to be folding on it (until i can water cool it), nor will any of my GPUs as i switch to i7/i5 systems as 2-3 i7/i5 systems use less power then 3x9800GX2s {6gpus} and make 2-3 more points if they are running 100% error free (find that unlikely until we get A3 big adv out but they did seem to work ok on my systems) 9800GX2 cards will be sold at £150 each, i have 8 of them (one of them is xfx one that default come very small over clock other makes are BFG vision xfx something els they are all the same card any way with an new sticker on), i had 9 but that one has now died
Look, I provided links to what I was refering to. If you have issue with the numbers, take it up with the reviewers in the links. The GURU 3D numbers are around the same too.
Already said sorry dude. bit-tech said it peaked at 80 degrees also. http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2009/01/30/bfg-tech-geforce-gtx-285-ocx-1gb/14 I'm not a fan of the paddle fan, my guess is it is a lot cheaper to manufacture. The design decisions regarding the cooling solution are clearly not made with the interest of enthusiasts at the forefront in my opinion. Same goes for the GTX 285 but the extra 15 degrees on top of that is ridiculous.
that looks cool most likey add £100 more to the cost of the card (and i do not have an water cooling loop)
GTX 480 temps I am running a XFX 280 GTX and a Inno3D 9800GT and there temps are 70-82 oc for the 280 under load and 60-70oc for the 9800 GT under load now but that was not always the case. They are normally running 24*7 . The worst I have seen is 105oc on the 9800GT The XFX 280 GTX has been running now for approx 80 days 24/7 at these temps and no problerms so far. The 9800 GT was running at the 105 oc for about 6 hours as I failed to spot the temp(2nd card) card had all ways run ok before as single GPU setup so didn't think there would be any problems with temps. But once it was checked and found to be this high app was terminated straight away untill better cooling could be setup. I had to put a fan above the 9800GT to blow cool air down onto its own fan. Temps have dropped to between 50oc-70oc under load. If the GTX 480 does give out some good PPD and temps can be achieved around the 80oc under load I may be tempted. As it would replace my current two.
I am currently looking to upgrade my gfx card, I know ATI is faster in games but I also like to fold too, so am forced to look at Nvidia's offerings. If ATI got their act together, I would buy one of their cards straight away! Surely there must be lots of people in the same situation as me? Enough to make it viable for ATI to make an effort, why don't they do something about it? CPC, have you questioned ATI on why they insist in dragging their hells in this regard?
Repeatedly... Unfortunately I don't think it's a case of priorities; the simple answer is that ATI has a much smaller developer relations team/budget than Nvidia. It's particularly tragic now as lots of enthusiasts are being turned away from HD 5000-series cards because while they are the best for gaming, they are very slow at folding. I'd like to think there is a new more efficient ATI folding client on the way, but having been promised one for several years I'm not holding my breath anymore.
Everyone knows you have to speculate to accumulate. There are all these people saying "Hey ATI I have some money for you" and they are just saying "Nahhh, we don't want it", what a wasted opportunity. Would it make any difference if we made some kind of petition up? EDIT: Found this... http://www.brightsideofnews.com/new...e-ati-radeon-hd-5870-is-as-slow-as-4870!.aspx
Having just read this I owe Ati an apology, it seems Pande Group are to blame for incorrect code optimization. If they recode then it would appear Ati could perform as well as nVidia, which can only benefit them in the long run because more people could catch the bug! Roll on GPU3....
Take a look at the second section in this link regarding GPGPU processor power and iPhone password cracking. http://www.brightsideofnews.com/new...rce-gtx-480--gtx-480-sli-review.aspx?pageid=2 Obviously the 5870 has some really grunt there for processing.
damn that's impressive. where's the new GPU folding client, stanford? I'm sure my 4850 should get way more PPD... at least 3-4k PPD like a 9600gt, which it easily outperforms in gaming.
