ok my system keeps locking upwhen i'm playing CS, ive tried closing everything possible. My system specs are in my sig, it just happened to me just now and when i rebooted Asus Probe reported my temp as 51C. why does it do this, ive got uptodate graphics, sound, via, IDE, drivers
51C is a lot. Some AMD CPUs will crash at that sort of temp, even at stock speed and voltage, due to sample variation in the chips. Your case is perfectly well ventilated, assuming you have fitted fans to all of the slots. Perhaps your room temperature is particularly high? Easiest way to test whether this is the cause, rather than a bug in CS, is to run a CPUburn program, or something like the regular SETI client and keep the window maximised (that increases CPU temp about 2C over having it minimised). Watch the temps, and see if it crashes.
The silver mountain, although dangerous, isn't too bad a performer, and should easily cope with a 1700+ in a chieftec.
It's either heat or a graphics problem I should say. I used to get lockups when sumone lobbed a HE gren, or when there was lots of smoke on screen. Changed my video drivers an it cured it. As Isaac said, just keep an eye on your temps and see whether you get lockups when the CPU is under load.
thanks for all your suggestions. ok my case doesn't have a fan in all the slots cause i couldn't afford it at the time of buying the case windows sometimes locksup but i can normally pull out of thet, Counterstrike is harder to pull out of. sometimes it recovers, sometimes i just give up waiting. maybe i should invest in some fans
That would be a great idea. Get at least two (one in top slot at back, on in top slot at front (keeps hard disk cool, which is never a bad thing). Then fill the other two as you see fit. I would recommend anything from 25 to 45 CFM. I have 3 45CFM YS-techs and 1 41CFM Panaflo H1A in those slots, and a 29CFM evercool on the side. I would like to change the evercool for a panaflo L1A, and the ystechs for H1As, but that's £40 worth of fans, and I don't have that money right now.
I just noticed that you took the temperature reading from Asus Probe, it's always wrong!! If you want to be exactly sure check in the BIOS or use VCool. There's nothing wrong with a few case fans though
Any motherboard sensor is wrong, and Asus have a habit of over-reading....however, since that 51C was taken AFTER a reboot, we can safely assume that the temperature will be higher when the processor is under load. I've seen many unstable AMD systems because people have neglected the case fans. They are NOT an optional extra, but a necessity. You can moan about the noise all you like, but the alternative is to not have a computer at all, or stick with an old 500MHz box. For many non-oc systems, in reasonably cool environments, 2 case fans (one in on front, one out on back) are adequate, but 4 allows some clever tricks (like more quiet fans gives less noise and similar/more airflow than fewer loud ones). Once your case temp remains solidly at room temperature under any CPU load conditions, then there's no more need for any more fans. It won't achieve anything more.
too right....on my system i didnt have time to put in fans in the case till yesterday, and i had to run it with the side of the case of... as soon as i put some cooling in it works fine... just invest in some nice case fans..
