hi, i am buliding a second (about £30 worth ) computer just for word processing and playing music to save cycles on my gaming machine and i was wondering if i could setup the following network. machine 1 --> machine 2 using netcard 1 and then onboard netcard -->familly computer with internet access just to clarify A connects to B and then B connects to C using a different card but at the same time. sorry its confusing would this setup work/allow internet to both of my PC's?
I had a similar setup once, except the machine with the 2 network cards was connected to a router for net access. It is possible, but the 'middle' machine has to be on for the other to get net access. Hardware-wise what you have there is correct but the software was where i had major problems. I was using Win2000 on both, and they because you're using 2 network cards in the middle machine each card had to be on a different subnet. It also needed IP routing turned on on the middle machine which involves a registry hack. I got it to work as much as both machines having internet access, but I had awful problems connecting to ftp servers on other machines on the network. It was something to do with using different subnets, I never sussed it and bought a cheap switch. Only about £10 inc P&P Sure I asked about it on here too when I was setting it up, might be worth a search.
well yeah thanks BJD! i think even if the middle one is off for some reason it's just a case of swapping a CAT-5 cable from one to the other right...... A and b will be pretty much on all the time as soon as i shush them enough for my mum not to notice i'v left them on when im at College so connectivity shouldnt be much of a problem (bit of oil on the cheap-ass fans i bought should do the job) , cheers again then BJ ill after iv done some e-shopping for some netcards
