Disable everything that runs at startup, expect your anti-virus of courese, and if you are on a laptop they are some things you may want to leave out, like some laptop has some sort of thing that give you feedback when you increase/decrease volume or screen brightness.

    Things to disable:
    - TeaTimer (I really don't wnat to know)
    - RTHDCLP.exe (keep it , if you use Realtek sound card control panel)
    - MOM.exe (unless you use teh ATI catalyse control panel)
    - CCC.exe(unless you use teh ATI catalyse control panel system tray icon icon)
    - mDNSResponder.exe (it's a service)
    - I don't get why you have 2 times ati2evxx.exe but anyway, look if that is normal, if it is leave it.
    - XBoxStat.exe (do you use this?)
    - ViewPointService.exe (do you use this?)
    - jusched.exe (I think you can update Java yourself)
    - wsntfy.exe
    - All your HP stuff
    - NMBgMonitor.exe (unless you use Nero crappy Media Center like software)
    - NMINdexing Service (unless you use Nero crappy Media Center like software)
    - RocketDock.exe (I don't want to know)
    - btdna.exe (Internet says SPYWARE... but check it out first just to make sure)

Well I think that is good for now...
In services you can disable stuff you don't need like Wireless Zero configuration thing if you don't have a wireless card.

TeaTimer - part of spybot S&D (the thing that pops up saying such and such is trying to do something, allow or deny)
mDNSResponder - contains bonjour. get rid. normally comes in as part of itunes, but not necessary (unless you have something special that uses it)
XBoxStat - MS 360 accessories - not needed
    jusched - read goodbytes
    wsntfy.exe - trojan
HP stuff - not needed to print
NM* - Part of nero - change ytou nero install to encompass only the bits you need
Rocketdock - gives you basically a big fat pretty quick launch bar - like the dock on a mac, on your pc
btdna - I'd get rid, but its designed as a content delivery system. comes in with bittorrent - read http://www.bittorrent.com/dna/?csrc=splash
Viewpoint - gets installed with lots of things. not particularly harmful

If you don't use the ATI cat icon in taskbar, you can disable it from within the control center (under advanced view, preferences, untick "enable system tray menu")

i'd uninstall teatimer. a weekly scan for spyware should be plenty to keep your system clean. something running all the time like that is overkill. also, get rid of nero and install the insanely awesome InfraRecorder instead.

xboxstat is necessary if you use your xbox controller on your pc with a usb adapter. otherwise not.

    that's not too bad.

    @ work - my system starts 59 processes - 677 mb.

the laptops run about 76 processes and eat about 720 mb.

Here's how I remove things from my startup. I'm running XP and I know it's not as bad as Vista at hogging memory.. but this should help either way.

For starters, uninstall Viewpoint from the Add/Remove Programs. It's bundled crap that comes with AIM, but is easily removed.
Uninstall anything else that you know you do not use or do not want there anymore.
The rest of this is the nitty-gritty, get down to business stuff.

    Now then.
    - Go to Start->Run and type
    Code:
    msconfig
inside the box and press ok.
    - Go to services and check the Hide all microsoft services then disable the remaining ones.

Now you'll need to go into regedit.
Note: If you enable everything within the startup tab and then delete the registry entries, they are removed completely. Any unchecked tabs in the startup tab within msconfig will not be shown in the registry. I would check them all so they show up, and then if you have one you do not want to get rid of.. then don't delete it. But, everything within the Run keys are safe to delete, so feel free.

    - Click Start->Run and type
    Code:
    regedit
in the box and press ok.
    - Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run/ and delete everything inside that key. (Except what you want to keep of course)
    - Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run/ and delete everything inside that key. (ditto)
    - Close Regedit.
    - Restart your computer.

If anything continues to reload itself into your startup (check by going into msconfig), then you need to turn it off within that program itself.
If you have disabled something that you used, like a mouse driver that actually added functionality, you'll need to find that and turn it back on within the program.
I find this to be the most effective way of getting rid of unwanted startup items, but if anyone can add to this then go for it.
