I am going to have to modify what you said to :

Longhorn could have been good but it has turned out to be the Windows ME of the NT kernel.

Windows needs to start with a fresh kernel to get rid of the security bugs.

On the feature side Longhorn has been castrated repeatedly. WinFS was supposed to be up there with the likes of ReiserFS 4 (apart from WinFS being non atomic). This then changed to NTFS + SQL data base (which is ok but will run slow as hell). Then to NTFS + SQL database (but only in my documents) (which is a plain joke). THen to shelved.

NTFS is aging fast and a new FS is needed to keep windows running for the next decade. THey could choose the heavy hitter of ReiserFS 4 but they wont because its open source. They are going to have to make their own one but that is going to take a while especially as WinFS has been shelved for a while.
