Look at what I found in the trash around the corner. Ok, so its not my picture, but its the best I could do. What should I do with it? Could it be made to work with a PC, how about work as a PC... Suggestions please Oh yeah, it was sitting next to an old 286 (the psu is 10x4x8 inches with a 96mm fan) now what should I do with that?(the case weighs a ton and has no cover...)
People do throw out odd stuff, don't they? Butcher the PSU for the fan The 286 would probably make a nice retro key chain Wifey brought home the following for me today, as her company is moving: Fully functional Gateway Celeron 366 (destined to become my UNIX box) Fully functional 486SX Fully functional 486DX2 A 15" colour monitor A 12" black and white monitor Not sure what to do with the 486's, yet All for gratis. Luverly - I havent hacked about with stuff this old for ages... They sure are dusty though...
ok, here we go. i have some ecperience with both things. first the stylewriter. i think will only work with an apple. we had them at school and they do work with iMACs and powermacs. not so sure of the specifics, i dont really like to touch them. as for the 286. we have about 75 old ones at my school, and they just dont work unless you change the powersupply. the fan might be ok, but i would bet that the caps in the PSU are dead. i had fooled with them and i found that they would turn on, but then power down a few seconds later still, they are a good source of drive bays and mobo standoffs. i use one as a sawhorse. others have been chopped up and made into various designs outta the sheetmetal. good practice if your gonna try to cuz metal with a dremel. if youre lucky you might be able to find some good leds, some led wires, and a keylock thingy. we also have a ton of AT keyboards and i use one as a hammer cuz im too poor to afford tools.
I was thinking of shoving a uATX mb and a HD ect and making the printer into a computer...... Itd fit, does anybody know if the pSU for th thing supplies 12V? So far as the 286, An ISA vid card with RCA out (good for my bros comp) 6 sticks of 8 MB 30 Pin RAM (keychain) I like that proc Idea, I already have an assortment of MB on my shelf an old 486, PI, PII(slot and socket 370 combo and a socket 370 board, as well as an old AMD POWERED teradyne server board from 1982 that my my UNI was throwing away (wo chips gone and rewired and a fries proc) keychains anyone? (man those old boards have sharp solder joints Any other suggestions?
Not sure about the PSU for the printer supplying 12V, but whatever it supplies, you'd need to do something to give you your various voltages required. The other thing is, The PSU probably isn't man enough for the job of driving everything a PC requires, as it's only designed to run the printer. Not trying to put a downer on the project - honest You'll probably be petter getting a stock PSU, build an enclosure for it and extend the leads you need into the PrinterPC (as an umbilical cord type thingy)
I figured Id have to pick up an uATX one... I thought it might work its got the same type of plug(incidentally I was given an old and I mean old HP laserwriter thats sitting in my garage, what could I do with that .... Man I have a Bunch Of usless carp. I know a printer computer has been done, but well? How about two printer computers, on ecompact, one large? Any other ideas...
