As much as I wouldnt want it to happen to me the restricted bikes you have are going to be a good thing to first time riders. Too many people start out on a R1 and f*** themselves and their bike up. I had many miles offroad before I got on the street so me jumping right on a 750 and then a 1200 wasnt as bad. :D

Personally I wish I would have gotten something like a KLR650 as my first because that would probably be still running, plus sportbikes dont take well to off road situations.

Contemplated it, but I'd only use the bike for short back road journies around where I live where 125cc for two years is actually quite a nice idea :)

Ah, I see. I'm a little undecided - I'm not too keen on the idea of a 125 4t for two years... but an RS125 derestricted could keep me happy. Then again, I absolutely love the looks of the R125... argh. I guess there's always the option of a restricted 600. My riding would be short journeys most of the time too :)

Best bet - Do your CBT on test centre bike. Immediately book in for your test with 3 days training. Do your test. Soon as you've passed your test, buy whatever bike you want, and restrict it if necessary. May as well get it all over and done with at once and save the hassle if you can afford to... works out cheaper in the long run.

If all rides are short journeys you don't want a 2 stroke. They take 15 to 20mins to get up to full temp, and you don't want to leave them idling for that long to get them there before you ride it. If your day to day ride is never more than 20mins at once, you'll end up gunging up the exhaust port and powervalve continuously. You won't be able to rev past the powervalve until it's up to temp, so you'll be limited to top speed of a 4T-125 until it's fully warmed up, and if you try to force it before it's warm enough then you could end up with the piston nipping up. If you're permanently running it under temp, you're more likely to get a seizure and have to then fork out for top-end rebuilds. Note, none of this is covered on warranty on a new bike, and a top-end rebuild will rush you around £200 at a shop.

    2007 Norton NRV588

Currently housed in the Norton Motorcycle Museum. Norton are looking for 150x buyers for it so that they can enter it in WSBK.
OR, you could make your own utilising a Mazda engine...

i recently went down the DAS route and would recommend it, i now have a fz6 fazer and it is far easier to ride than the 500cc i spent 7 hours learning on, i would say riding a 125cc for 2 years is the more dangerous route as you have limited power to get away from the mad people in cars who will try their best to kill you :eeek:

Keep in mind that i live in gibraltar not UK or anything. So its a small place where traffic etc can't really be compared to that of other places

I got a CBR 125 last Nov, had a days practice for my CBT and that was it... i found it easy as pie to get on and ride, looks ok ( though a little small for someone whos 6 foot 2...), had no probs with it at all ( other then bits that i broke!) and fairings arnt TOO expensive to replace if damaged- almost everyone at sometime will drop their bike at the least! i got an 04 plate for £1400, think there was about 5k on the clock and a number of previous keepers...didnt look acident damaged ( until i got it... when it had 2!) but done me well, nice ride and ive managed to get 80mph on mine today! ( with the wind behind me and going downhill). Fairly cheep to run to- not measured distances on a tank but think a 5l tank lasts me about 100 miles. cheepest insurance i found by far was through honda themselves! everyone else ( inc bennets and motocycle direct) was about £800 ( i was 22 and had just cbt) one call to honda and i got a quote for £270! and lets face it.. £15 for road tax is cheep!

For that money, phone your nearest bike school and book in for a whole week encompassing CBT and DAS all on the school's bikes... should get that in for £600 - ignore 125's etc... just do an intensive week on hire bikes with test at end of it. With what you have left (including your full A License at the end of it) spend the remaining £3k on whatever decent 600 sportsbike that floats yer boat... can pick up a 95 FZR600 Genesis Foxeye for less than £2k and insure it for less than £600.

    One slight problem - he's 17, not 21 ;)

Gorgeous bikes, I remember lusting after them when I was little(er) :D It'd have to be the white/purple/turquoise/orange color scheme for me though :D
