Hey, im looking for a new laptop but dont really know what to look for. I know next to nothing about lappies but was wondering if there were any guides or words of wisdom you may have.

Things i would like to know:
Processor speed: They all seem to be very low (1.6GHz) how does this compare with desktop comps.

Athlon or pentium? whos the fav (I run athlons currently)

Centrino, celeron (dont think so), Centrino Duo, Althon, Turion 64 and so on and so on

Graphics cards also how do they compare with desktops?

    Any help would be great.

What do you want to use your laptop for?

My main consideration was battery life since I never use my laptop at my desk etc. so I selected a lower speed processor and basic graphics giving me 4 hours on the basic single battery. If yours will be a desktop replacement then go for the powerful processors and graphics cards as battery life won't be as important (some only offer an hour...)

I don't really notice any difference in the 1.5GHz processor that I have in the laptop and my desktop machines, but again it really depends on what you want to use it for...

The Pentium Centrino and Celeron models are currently the best for low power consumption, and the Celeron really isn't that bad unless you're planning on using it for gaming.

    well basicaly theres 2 choices....
Power Or Battery Life.. or portability vs stuckin the house(ness)

i h8 2 say it but intel have got a better laptop system than AMD

u get 4-5 hours out of a HP laptop with centrion tech where as the turion version of the laptop is about 2-3 :(

how ever the Turion is one hell of alot faster than the centrino

best speced laptops ive seen and sold are the Fujitsu Siemans stuff things like Athlon 64 M 4000+ with 100 gig HDD and 1GIG mem... not bad for a lappy

Quality wise Sony n HP seem 2 be the most reliable... i very rarly c them back with hardware probs.... the sonys tend 2 use Intel centrinos rather than the turion :(
where as HP will use anything lol

but if ure looking for decent power vote AMD
If u wanna watch 3 dvds in a row when on a plane grudgigly vote intel (god that hurt 2 say that)

can ya tell i dispise Intel :p
hope this helps a lil if ya have any other Q? just pm me n ill get 2 u asap

oh PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DONT BUY AN ACER !!!

Hey, thanks for the help im looking for something that i can use for my main computer at uni as i dont wanna have my main comp at uni. Really I want something thats powerful and battery life isnt a main factor But i dont want a brick to carry around with.

May be used with gentoo linux too so will need compiling power! (lots of the damn stuff :p)

Would like gaming, something that would run UT2007 (when its out) but not full quality or anything just something that wont be to jerky (X700?)

    Cheers!

I know loads of people who have Acer Laptops and they've all said they were great and never had a problem with them. They're good value too.

I have an Acer with a Turion, it's very good. Although the Turion's do give slightly worse battery life, they can be easily undervolted to improve that. And they're cheaper too. Fairly sleek size and styling for a mid-powered machine as well, IMO.

As for graphics, the X700 is probably the best compromise between performance and battery life. If you can, make sure you get a 128MB one as the extra 64MB does make quite a difference. You should be able to play UT2007, not at very high settings, but it should run.

im just looking at Acer in the shear returns sense i get the back to my store. in comparionson 2 any other brand they are the worst for returns.. that said u can pick up a good priced one. but if ure going down the acer route get on exstended cover on it least that means uve got a laptop for atleast 3-5 years.

in that same note no Fujitsu-Seimans are the worst in the desktops we do there back with hardware faults all the time... shame realy cause there specs are amazing but the price is low.. guess that there useing cheapo parts...

What's the actual cause of the return with the Acers though, I bet it's rarely actually down to hardware failure or it falling to bits but rather the user causing the damage or installing things they shouldn't etc.

What's the sales volume of the Acers compared to the others you are dealing with also?

Acer 5020 series, same as mine. Though you would have to change the HDD, as most Acer's only have a 4200rpm drive. Acer Ferrari 4000 series, not sure on the hard disk though.

After a brief look and memory refresher, I'm not sure anybody else other than Acer has an X700-Turion combination.

My dad has an Acer 5020, and I own a 3022 - can't fault them tbh.

Technoworld prices are pretty good (UK).

Have you considered a MacBook Pro? Good power (Intel core duo) Good battery life (Intel core duo) widescreen lcd, up to 2 gb ram, dvd burner built in, wifi built in, bluetooth built in....

$2000 isn't so bad for all of that and build quality is top notch.

Not only that but you can install windows on a macbook pro. I am basically in the same dilemma, but i really want to see a core duo with a 7800 paired together or maybe a X2 4000+.
