I'm getting fed up with the noisy fan on my current EVGA 460, it gets really loud when it goes above 55% fan speed. The cooler looks like a 60mm fan and exhausts from the back of the card (http://trinifieds.com/classifieds/wp-content/uploads/classipress/evga-nvidia-460-240927214.jpg). I have a hearing loss so it's difficult to say whether it's fan whirring or the rush of airflow, but from experience I know 60mm fans are noisy. So I'm looking for a graphics upgrade and want it to be quiet also. I'm not sure I can be convinced to get that same cooler design again from EVGA so how does MSI/Gigabyte/Gainward do on preventing noise pollution, as I've noticed they have larger fans? Cheers
the phantom from gainward i think is supposed to be very good performance, and also very quiet. it also looks great i would get the 3gb phantom, but i am waiting for new nvidia cards to come out. perhaps you should too? just a suggestion
And that's the million dollar question I have a 570 Phantom and TBH I think it's very quiet and good for temps so I would think the 580 would be similar.
I suppose the fact that the 580 is so much more powerful than the 460, probably means that the fans are foing to have to work a lot harder, so the chance of it being quieter are slim. Unless you wc of course...
That depends on what rumours you read. The first Kepler cards could be anything from one to three months away. And we don't know yet whether the first cards will be high-end or entry level.
I can vouch for the 570 phantom, tis a lovely card, quiet and cool. No reason not to think the 580 would be the same.
I have the Asus GTX 580 Direct CUII. It is very quiet and cheaper than the Phantom. The only downside is that it is 3 slots wide. Would definitely recommend. The only thing is with new cards due from Nvidia and more from AMD in 2 or 3 months I would wait and see how the prices play out.
Thanks all, think I will wait for the next gen cards. No point spending £400 now and having it drop to £200 within months!
