I believe it is a multithreaded game, but its badly implemented in that instead of balancing the load across multiple cores, one core always has more load than the others. This is an interesting article
Ground Control is a stunningly good game. Viciously hard too. Not an "old-school" RTS, but it definately draws you in. I always strived to have one unit of infantry make it all the way through the campaign. "Jaegers Pride" as they were always called. AT special rounds meant that they could see off at least a few Heavy Terra/Hoverdynes. The AA Terradynes were a thing of beauty to behold.
I just tried the Core Maximiser tool, and it does work in Windows 7. Here is a comparison using the same map and same number of players for each: As you can see, the first core isn't maxed out when using CM, but the other cores aren't doing a great deal either. This may just be because it's a new game and there aren't many units on the map, so it may have more of an impact with larger battles.
Apologies for the thread derail but..... Interesting! I may have to give that a go. Could you load an old savegame or something with lots of units?
yeah it doesnt impact on saved games so they dev says so you should be able to load a heavy game and test it. it says its good for windows vista and providing you run it with UAC off and as admin it should work
World in Conflict is utterly amazing, no base building - but it's one of the (very) few RTS's to pull it off well. Having said that I think the Single player is much better than the multiplayer (can't remember if you can do the campaign co-op or not, don't think so) Civ4 complete. Wave goodbye to days of your life. Fall from Heaven 2 (mod) puts a very unique fantasy spin on things, worth checking out.
I don't have any large saved games, so I'll have to experiment with that later when I've got more time
I've been playing a lot of cnc generals zero hours vs comp lately. I haven't played it online, Id image it would be much harder and tougher. The trouble is when you add the competition factor into it, it just becomes a whole new level of addiction. I play vs comp inbetween writers block, or when I can't work. Cnc red alert 2 is also pretty good. The only game i play online is age of empires 3, it's absolutely brilliant. You will need to buy all the addons for the largest user base though.
Here you go: That's a game on Seton's Clutch with 7 adaptive AI's, and about half an hour in. I loaded from the same save point each time and let it run for about a minute. That was about half an hour into the game, so there wasn't a massive amount of units, but enough to show the true effect of the core maximiser tool. It seems the game does make some use of the other cores with larger games, but not very much, and with CM it seems to evenly distribute the load over all the cores (this is without HT, as it apparently treats HT cores differently). I would imagine that given another hour or so into the game there would probably be noticeably less slowdown.
Wow, that it is actually pretty impressive if you ask me! I may have to download that! Thanks for doing all the testing mate! I've only OC'd my CPU to 3.1Ghz so this could be a particularly useful tool to those of us with slower/stock CPUs
im gunna try it on stock first then if it slows down on my 4Ghz i7 920 ill run the core maximiser to so if it helps
already linked to it check my posts http://forums.gaspowered.com/viewtop...=203463#203463 here it is again though
just play starcraft 2, looks good and it is pretty much THE best multiplayer RTS out there, no other game comes even close to fun you get when you play coop 2v2 online whilst shouting to your mates on skype/ventrillo/teamspeak!
Yep - just converted another mate to zerg - now doing 3-3 with 2 mates all playing zerg Just looove putting the fear of the zerg into people!!!
Most definitely! They're very accessible to gamers who don't usually play RTS games too - particularly Supreme Commander 1.
