I need to find a new cheap hosting package that has some mailboxes. I'm currently not very happy with 123-reg.co.uk's mailboxes as the anti-spam feature can't be disabled, nor do they give you the choice of looking at what mail was blocked. Although I do know for certain that mail from a friend's @gmail.com address, and any emails from T-Mobile never come through. 123-reg support were very unhelpful on the matter, telling me to set the anti-spam at its weakest setting so all emails come through (which is far from the truth!), besides it was already at its weakest setting. Anything that is equal to £2.50 a month, which I get with 123-reg starter hosting would be good, £3 p/m is acceptable too. Thanks!
just a question, why not use stuff like @gmail or @hotmail? save your self the little bit of cash and they let you view the spam folders.
Nah I like my own personal email address, it shows my website as well so I'm not in the habit of changing my address on 200+ sites again though, had to do that once when I used ISP email and left them.
1and1 have the most ridiculously poor setup of web hosting FYI. Nightmare for developers - they have advanced tools like git but some really basic PHP settings are all over the shop.
Never used PHP, when I was doing more challenging stuff I went from fasthosts (who were decent, and with good support) to a VM with 1and1, total control & no problems I can report on and again, decent support. I've been talking to their server guys at like 11pm in the past helping resolve issues with Actinic so I believe they are as fair a choice as any other. OP was looking for email hosting tho....no? Spam not deleted, it is moved to another folder, supports both POP and IMAP, spam filter can be totally disabled, and they even give you enough space to put up a very basic web homepage. for 69p+VAT - I'd call that good value. Only company I'd specifically steer well clear of is Active24. Awful, truly awful.
I personally use the free version of google apps. You can easily set your own domain up on it, you get all the functionality of gmail, or can just use it as a pop3/imap server and it integrates nicely if you have an android phone http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html
Google Apps looks decent! Will test email functionality with one of my domains I don't really use, if I like how it works it I'll switch my main domain to it! Thanks for the suggestion for 1and1.co.uk, will look into that if Google Apps doesn't do what I want. Also, anyone on or used to be on Smooth-Host.co.uk?
We are actually using google apps with quite a few clients now who are at that awkward stage where pop3 boxes on the web server aren't good enough and they don't have enough users (read, budget) to warrant hosted exchange. They recently reduced the number of users from 50 to 10 which is disappointing, but for personal stuff and small businesses, it is great. Reliability is also very good as is deliverability of emails to the big providers (hotmail, yahoo, bt, aol etc) once you have spf records set up.
Google Apps seems to do what I need so far, pretty nice for the price of nothing, ta Nedsbeds Will have to remember to check the spam folder in webmail every now and then as this folder will not show in Thunderbird. That's the only downside of it, but can live with that.
