I'm trying to create a program primarily in PHP to run on Open Source versions of linux (meaning no proprietary/closed source software needed) and I need as much help as I can get.

It is going to be very elaborate, and I'd like to make it modular.

The project is called "Open Campus".

To give a brief glimpse, a University should be able to install it over a weekend, spend about two or three weeks customizing the different modules to meet their business needs, then start using it to practically run the campus within a month of installation.

I want a module to register students, let students apply, and keep track of each student's courses.

Another module would keep track of student financial aid, and would also be used to enter in all financial aid with built-in calculators for all federally funded financial aid. (I would be programming for the US, but I'd like there to be different modules for different countries)

Another module would take care of employment, whether it be student employment, workstudy, full-time, part-time, on-call, faculty, etc. The module would carry a brief description of each person's job, their pay grade, what they are getting paid, when they get paid, and even store bank account info if they get direct deposited. The tool would also have features that would run on specific machines that just print out paychecks all day. (and direct-deposit them via the web)

Yet another module would contain teacher management tools, for teachers to view/store/calculate student's grades, which would also have to tie in to either WebCT, or would have to offer an open source equivalent.

Then there's the whole accounting and human resources side I don't know about yet that would make it easy to hire, fire, promote, etc. and another to deal with outside ventors and whatnot.

So, if you are interested in the least, please email me: chris [at] woventhorns [dot] com.

As soon as I get enough people interested, I'm going to draw up an official guideline/outline of what needs to be done, along with some coding standards I'd like to be followed.

I want to make it open source, free, and easy to use. If this makes money, it would be through grants, donations, support, and hardware sales. Of course any money it makes in the future would be distributed among the core programmers, but that may or may not happen depending on the success of the project.

Right now I see using PHP for the web interface running on a Linux/Apache webserver using various MySQL servers for data storage, and extra PHP modules which would have to be written in C/C++, using Zend's API.

The experience I would find most beneficial would be PHP, core PHP hacking (i.e. writing C modules for PHP), interfacing Point of Sale machines, MySQL development/administration, Linux administration, Security, Networking, and some leet C programming skills for any other custom modules/server apps we would need.

That sounds pretty cool. I'd love to help but don't know any programming aside from some basic c/c++ and shell scripting(perl and ksh.) I'd suggest checking some Linux forums.

    www.linuxquestions.org
    www.justlinux.com

I've gotten a lot of help with shell scripting and Linux in general at both sites and the people seem to know their stuff. Good luck with this.

    New Update:

I just submitted the project to SourceForge.net, and have about 5 programmers interested. The name would be OSCampus (Since OSCommerce was catchy, why not? :p) That and every other good name was taken.

The university I am working at currently is spending around $40 million USD on an application that does less than what I want this one to do! So if we are successfull, I think this may turn into something profitable, but I'm not expecting any financial compensation for at least the first 4 years. (Just to make sure I'm in an Open Source mindset, not a capitalistic one.)

I'm just going to use my business to support it (meaning I can legally accept donations and make business purchases to support the project, but I'll be paying taxes on it as I'm not a not-for-profit... too much paperwork), but I won't be making profit off of it without the initial programmers having a say in monetary disbursement first. (meaning if this gets big, programmers get financially compensated based on metrics to be determined by the programmers themselves. So I don't get rich without you getting rich.)

But, it will more than likely stay with a budget of $0 for the first 2-4 years IMO.

I'd be willing to help if you're still looking for developers. C++ is a no go for me, but I consider my PHP and mySQL skills quite strong.

drop me a line if interested:

Well, I forgot to update this thread, but yes, it was approved by sourceforge, so the website is:

    http://oscampus.sourceforge.net

    and the project site is:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/oscampus/

Feel free to contact me at: oneseventeen [at] users.sourceforge.net if you are interested and I will email you back within a day or so to let you know a few more details.
