Hey guys, basically I've been tasked with starting up an Information Technology Club here at our campus. I'm going to focus on Networking/Gaming for the club, since I believe that would peak the most interest here when it comes to IT. What I'm looking for is some good LAN tourney games. Free would be the best, but anything should work as long as it's inexpensive and can run on just about any PC. Give me some recommendations bit-tech community!
Quake Live might be worth a look. It's broswer based Quake 3 arena so it will run on anything that can display a web page within reason. It now has a subscription model that allows you to create your own games, create clans and all that kind of stuff. The Pro subscription is £3.18 a month and the Premium is £1.59 a month. Standard is of course free. http://www.quakelive.com/#!home And one more Diablo 2! 8 player monster mashing mayhem. It's does cost but in my opinion for such a great game it's worth it. EDIT: I forgot Worms! +1 internets to Mr Dancingbear84
Open Arena It is a free version of quake, and you can host local servers on Linux. Trackmania (duh) And HON/LOL, I can never remember which one is free.
CS, then some more CS and then more. Borderlands? Only recently played a little co-op and really enjoyed it.
Racing: Trackmania FPS: Quake live or Counterstrike 1.6 RTS: Starcraft 2 Other: Heroes of newerth, Dota or Bloodline champions You can run all of them on pretty much any pc but SC2, HoN, BLC, and QL cannot be played over LAN.
Soldat is also a fun little free game worth trying. Alien Swarm is free if everyone can get on steam (it is also only 4 player)
Alien Swarm is a seriously underrated game. It has its downfalls, but it is a fun game! And it is free!
Urban Terror - Free; CounterStrike-esque game, slightly faster pace however, based on quake 3 engine and will run on almost anything (guy comes to our computing society LAN's with a machine 1.4GHz P4, 256mb RAM, 64mb GPU and can run it fine) Armagetron - Free; Tron Lightcycle based game, very, very addictive. AssaultCube - Free; Another Generic Shooter with quirky dungeon feel to it, CTF is advisable on this. Warsow - Free; Hi paced Quake/UT style game based around alien pig creatures; Wall Jumps, Long Jumps, all used to make yourself a harder target to hit while also used as a tactical advantage to gain a quicker kill against the players who dont know how to pull them off RedEclipse - Free; This One is relatively new (came out in march 2011) Based on the CubeEngine 2 (AssaultCube Engine, but improved) high paced quake arena style game but put on turbo in some matches, there is also the ability to have short bursts of flight to add to the mix, the HUD may be a tad perplexing even to the most experienced FPS player.
If you want to build up to some twitchy, tense versus FPS, you can't go wrong with Raven Shield. You can get it for a couple of quid a licence now and it never fails to startle and sweat.
Awesome, thanks for the suggestions guys! I'll have to take a look into these games, got pretty long list now!
CNC-Tiberian Sun (it's free now) Serious Sam Freespace 1 & 2 Tremulous Alien Swarm (it really is fun, especially the turrets ) For cheap games i would check out what gog.com has.
