Sorry, there is nothing worthwhile to learn by putting 110v AC through a NIC. If you want to see magic smoke, be honest, and say that.
I'm married for 5 years now (Dec 9th) and all I can say is, if you have to kill a whole comp to get a new HDD, you need therapy. Or a job so SHE doesn't have to buy you one. Always a good thing, so you don't have to fry a perfectly good comp to get a Raptor HDD. I really have to agree, at least set something on fire that isn't as usefull as a computer. I have around here somewhere an ISO file for a stripped down version of linux that just boots and runs Fold@Home. Even that seems to be a better use of old hardware then burning it up. Was it William Gibson that wrote: silicon never dies. All these old CPUs have alot of non-gaming life left in them. It's a shame to see it wasted. It makes me smile when I see posts where people bring old P2's back to useful life. I had P1 that made a great web/email station.
Reminds me of a competion at a lan party (UK, Multiplay - i18 I think it was...).. there were comps fitted with this card that rolled back system state or something like that (can't remember details sorry..), and a case of champane for someone who managed it. IIRC someone did, but can't remmeber how.
The guy with the wife - it was an old peice of history worth about $15 at a yardsale, so I'd say the challenge was well worth it. Also, a quick google search turned up the one, the only, EtherKiller.
Umm yeh, no offense but you guys are retards, automatically assuming I'm trying to **** up some public use computer, not the case at all. How many people do mods just to say they've done them? If you go to disaster mods I'm sure you can find a ton of people doing the exact same thing. I recall people taking requests on how they should destroy monitors (down the stairs fire, etc. and they'd video tape it) it's not much different than that. Like right now I bet none of you guys can say you've made one where I have (finished it yesterday havent tested or tried it yet) I've got a pentium with like a 3 mb hdd in it and a floppy drive, that doesn't boot up. That's my test computer. So (to Mace and Caj, Mace especially) sarcasm /sarcasm A computer like that doesnt do much good, but I didn't see anyone busting on the guy with those monitors.
A. I didn't say I hope your ass gets fried.. B. Destroying your computer by throwing it down the stairs is different from making a device that could easily be used to screw up an infinite amount of other computers (especially considering that it can be done quickly and stealthily). C. I don't appreciate being called a retard, considering that I am 100% mentally sane. D... That nice set of words doesn't exactly convince me that you weren't intending on using this device for evil acts on other computers, hence my previous posts. As you see, I never actually offended you, so I would appreciate the same amount of respect (IE: Not being called a retard), I simple tried to convince you that making such a device with intentions of killing someone else's pc is a very bad idea, which should not be carried through. E. I appologize for automatically assuming that you would use the information shared with you to commit a crime against a computer and/or person, but it is things like that which get sites like bit-tech in trouble (which is why they have to have extensive terms of service and such)... I hope we can reach a mutual level of understanding of both parties, thanks.
Well it would have been a whole lot easier to flip that switch from 115 to 230 on the PSU (or the other way) provided it wasn't active PFC. And that was a bet about his "hacking" skills more than what you said. I like RR5's idea with natrual selection kicking in. Answer to everything
Yes I know Mace, it was Zep, that posted that, however just off the bat being considered a criminal isn't exactly how I'd like to be thought of . But yes I can understand how it could be interperated in that manner. It's more for shits and giggles than anything else. When all you do is ask a simple question, and you get like 4 people or so posting that I'm almost 100% going to do a crime I don't really quite know how else you would respond, like if you said you needed to know how to make thermite for destroying computers, which i'm sure someone's posted about, it's the same as me saying OOOH NO HE'S GONNA BURN A HOLE IN A CAR! But I'll just let it go, it's not a huge life-ending deal
