Hey guys, first time posting in Photog section so bare with me.

I am looking to pick up a DSLR camera due to money constraints I am buying second hand. To some this is a no no dependant on the seller. In this case I will be buying from CEX.

This is what I am looking to pick up. It will be mainly used to photograph hardware, peripherals etc

    Any thoughts?

It's fine, i have one at home. Keep in mind it doesn't live view (no live picture on the LCD) and doesn't do videos. Otherwise you will be satisfied. If you need those features, then you should AFAIK look at D5000 or D3100.

I can take multiple shots and pick the best from my pc. So preview and video isn't an issue.

I will mention that to FlasH. I was thinking about buying a semi decent camera for future events I attend like Eurogamer in Sept. So it might come in handy :thumb:

By Live View i mean the fact that the huge LCD at back of the camera cannot be used as a viewfinder - you have to use the small viewfinder. Higher or newer Nikon DSLR cameras have the Live View (="use the LCD as viewfinder") feature, D3000 doesn't - that's all.

Ok, well it has been suggested I buy the next version up the Nikon D3100. More expensive, so will be saving for it I guess xD

What about FlasH? is he looking for one as well?

Saw post on FB, fair enough. You'll also need a light tent and some lighting for a good product photography.

Eurogamer was very dark, not very photo friendly. You can either go with a P+S and use its flash, or buy a DSLR and a fast lens*.

*fast lens: a lens with large aperture that allows you to use faster shutter speed. the smaller f number the faster it is. ideally you will want f2 or lower number at Eurogamer. I was using a 50mm f1.8 lens at Eurogamer.

Thanks for the advice, FlasH has a camera already. For the most part this camera will be used to take photos of hardware etc and maybe used out doors at times. I always wanted to get into photography. Did some black and white stuff many years ago. Even got to print my own photos.

I would NOT recommend the D3000. I had issues with mine having hot pixels all over the place and a slow degradation of the image sensor.

I would recommend the D3100 over it instead and the extra money would be well worth it in my experience.

Dom, keep an eye out on the pricing of the 3100. I'm looking at it too, also interested in buying it. However, just before xmas there was a big cash back offer. It might be coming back in some shape.

Hey guys thanks for the advice, this is all down to money at the end of the day. And I think I will go with as Bridge Camera for the moment. Half the price of the D3100 and should cover my needs for the moment.

Anything more expensive will be at a later date dependent on whether this Hardware Review thing becomes a payable venture.
