I'll take a lot of flak for this, but i can certainly see where he's coming from and someone needs to stand up for it... If a relationship is denied for long enough, standards will lower until something sticks, if nothing ever sticks, don't be surprised how low the bar can go... I think the only thing probably stopping me going as far as the Japanese is the fact the UK culture is not as accepting as the JP one... Don't judge him if he's happy with the result...
I'm allowed to be worried Besides, i think only the prevailing culture really changes us, point still stands
