    :jawdrop: holy crap batman! :jawdrop:
If this case looks even remotely like that 3d render it is gonna be awesome

Those drive stealthings are prob the best i've seen any where, but hey, thats what you can achieve with £1000's of CAD software and CNC milling machines!!! :D

    def. subscribing to this one.
    keep up the good work

    .: Fillip :.

[EDIT] forgot to ask, is that window actually going to be a cut out or will it be paint/etch on the window - looks impressive just very delicate???

Defianetely a project I will aslo keep an eye on. More interested in seeing how you will create your bends and folds with the aluminum as I have a few CAD renderings myself stashed away until a later time. I'm no mechanical engineer but its so much easier to draw the project and totally forget about the machining process and how difficult that can get.

Should also ask you where you're located in michigan? As I'm from Grand Rapids.

Holy frickin' wow!!! Very very nice. I love the look of it, especially the side window. And the box name on the back panel. Very well planned, and looking damned goos already from the laser cut goodness. Love the cd bezel too!!!

Whoah, lots of replies! :D You guys rock!

I'm going to go try to do some engine turning, or jewelling, on some of the almuminum parts I've got so far. I want to do this now, because it'd be nearly impossible once the parts are bent. Here's a good reference page on engine turning: http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~eamonn/et/et.htm

xrain: Dunno if there's really a secret. I've just been running CAD stuff for about 15 years. And I sketch and draw all the time.

Vo0Ds: Yeah, the whole thing will be aluminum. The only non-aluminum parts will be a couple acrylic pieces.

SeT: Guess I forgot to mention the buttons. :wallbash: They'll be clear acrylic, lit from behind by the activity led.

atomikhawk: You mean the drawings on my desk? Those are of my 1977 Caprice project. It's about halfway thru restoration and many performance mods. I was just working on some design changes for the front bumper as well as finding the right wheel design.

fillip: Hehe, the cad software I use is about $800, and the mill is a standard manual Bridgeport unit. The laser, however, runs about $600,000. And no, it's not mine. :hehe: It's owned by my parent company, Rogers Group. And the window design will be cut from the side panel and the loose pieces will be mounted to the plexi.

Snowshadow: I hope you'll find this log helpfull for getting designs from CAD to actual parts. If there's anything you or anyone else want me to ellaborate on, let me know. I'd be glad to post a more detailed guide :D And I live in Sanford, near Midland. I work in Clare. I've done several case projects for guys in the Grand Rapids area. I was just there last week in fact, with my dad. We're buying a powder painting line from one of the Steelcase plants there.

Everyone else: thanks for the encouragement!

Well in the mean team while you're doing some engine turning how about explaining something about the software you are using. Like why is it better to use NURBS for models rather than solids when it comes to machining your parts?

On another note my company does a lot of work for Steelcase as we are an architectural/engineering firm.

o well i guess that explans it..... 15 years expeariance vs. about 10 min

and about the $600,000 lazer cutter I GOTA GET ME ONE OF THOSE! :D :naughty:
well i have about $76 right now....

    600,000-76 = 599,924..........
aa well only $599,924 dollers to go, wait... i forgot about tax :duh:
    600,000 x .06 = 36,000
    36,000 + 600,000= 636,000
636,000-76 = $635,926..... dang any one got some spare change?

keep up the good work with your "lazer" cutter :D :p good luck

I got like $.68 if you need it. But I don't know how to get it to you.

Marcello: Defenitely do the Engine Turning!! That looks awesome. That could be a VERY nice part of the case if done in the right way. What parts are you considering doing it to? Either way, I wish you the best of luck!!!

    YAY, post 700!!!!!!!
