    Is it possible to network my old mac power book 1400 and a pc through the macs and PC parallel ports?

    maybe - why?

    is the 1400 new enough for USB? If not, doesn't it have pcmcia?

    only if you can find a client for the laptop that would work... Do you want to u se the 1400 or just get some data off of it? If its the later, take out the hard drive and put it in an enclosure and get the data off with another friends mac.

    I want to network the mac. Without buying any PCMCIA cards that function with System 8.1

    well - my next question was going to be to ask what os you were running.

    can you put 9 on it?

    I found this article that you might find interesting. I know that you just said you don't want to buy anything, but this gives step by step instructions for getting wi-fi running on a 1400 running any mac os from 7 on....

    The iMac was the first Mac to have USB and do without the old parallel ports.
