    There is a place and a need for macs like any other computer i.e sun, wintel etc. They all have advantages and disadvantages. Its a case of weighing up what your needs are and matching the avialable hardware/software to that need.

    If I could use Mac OSX, at the speed I can use WinXP (ie on a 2 gig machine with a lightning HDD and graphics card), and if I could run all the games I wanted on it, I would. As it is, I settle for running Word, IE, Outlook (ie day to day stuff) on my Mactop, and games, multimedia etc on my main Win rig.

    As for the hardware...need to have faster processors. No matter what a mac addict will tell you, the processors simply aren't fast enough. That said, the hardware is, off the shelf, hands down nicer than any pc kit i have laid my hands on. The only piece of pc kit I have come across that is as nice as my PowerBook is Project 3GClear, and some of the alu projects that the other staffers have worked on.

    I like macs, but the simple equation is Cost >> what I have. PC's are cheap and have comparable performance. I see Macs as High end/mission critical/business computers. I se PC's as Personal computers, nuff said.

    well I think that just about rounds it up,

    Pc's are cheaper, just as efficient, and are the home users thing

    macs, high end, expensive, special purpose machines.

    Enough Said, Now im goin to bed

    It used to be a case of macs being quicker than pc's thus good for high end graphics work but its simply no longer the case . Even apple have stopped spouting on about there baised benchmarking examples .

    Nowadays you can get a very good pc for much less than a slower mac . No contest , it wont be long before apple start using intels as otherwise they are going to die.

    However mac's innovation is up there with the best Imac is an amazing idea and changed the way we look at pc's The cube was another , the laptops look ace as do the quicksilvers :)

    But its a case of all show and no go at the mo

    and what makes the MAC mre specialized for graphics work like some people say? I can get along perfectly well with photoshop and some 3d program on a POS petn 3 700 mhz 128 mb PC100, takes a lil longer than i'd like for the detailed work but it does work. but as for the mac doing graphics better? I personally find the lack of a second mouse button irritating as hell. I can crank out stuff so much faster on my slow PC than on a MAC. And ive been using a MAC for about half a year at school. I personally dont like their OS at all. too many little anoyances to mention. and as for them claiming they never crash? Then how come I bring it down with only this in PASCAL:
    Code:
    PROGRAM death_is_iminent (input, output);

    CONST
         space = ' ';

    VAR
         a : integer;

    BEGIN

         writeln ('Enter any whole number to make the MAC go bye-bye.');
         readln (a, space,  'This string will f00k you up lill-maccy-poo', space, a);

    END.

    Oh, and when not purposely trying to make my MAC crash it dies anyways. I usually lose what I'm working on 3 times a week. And yet I have not in 4 months had a single problem with windows XP. I am serious, not problems whatsoever. Grrr... its just soooooo irritating. Its crappy hardware on a different OS. thats pretty much it in a nutshell. It's just so anooying that they can sell something sooo overpriced simply because it looks purty and has a different OS.

    err...... I didnt want to make this a rant, but I guess it turned into one anyways. sorry. its just that I've used both a PC and a MAC and thats my opinion.:wallbash:

    Dunno they've tested p4's out already :)

    In terms of crashing, I've crashed the uni g3's far more than the pc's so that argument was always wrong.

    The one mouse button thing is plain stoopid nowadays my god u've got mice with 8 buttons now its time apple woke up. I love it when apple fans say well u can buy a new mouse yes you could but why should u :D

    G3 is pretty bad now, G4 all the way :p However, get yourself one of these beauties :

    www.apple.com/powerbook

    That's what I use, and it is the ultimate portable machine : powerful, huge screen, 4hr battery life, decent 3d graphics, thin and light and sexeh as hell. OK, so its never going to beat my 2400+ Ti4600 windows machine, but in terms of everyday usage, I much prefer my Mac. And yes, I did drop £2000 on it :eeek:
