Im in the same situation. I was ideally looking something I could play CS Source on now and again, but wasnt expecting anything other than Intel graphics. A 13" MacBook Pro would have been ideal for what Im looking, though a MacBook will suit my actual needs just fine.

I figure Im going to leave it a while anyway. Some of the features of the MacBook will have to be implemented into the MBP line, such as MagLatch and user upgradable HDD. When this will happen is anyones guess, but even an upgrade on the MacBooks graphics frnt may be worth the wait.

Its annoying though, there is no logical reason I need a new notebook. My 12" iBook is fine for what I need to do, but I now want a new MacBook or MBP. Ive had to buy myself a Cube to distract myself from the all the pretty new hardware.

You probably would have got the same machine at the same price as apple would have upgraded you for free and give you back the difference ;)

My first instinct would be to say
RAM: Yes (Easy on the Powerbooks and iBooks)
    Hard drive: No

But apparently, the hard drive in the Macbook is user replaceable! Check out the article HERE.

For those who can't be bothered to go there, check out the funky new keyboard (Which apparently is integrated into the case, so if you break it you'll have to replace the whole casing :duh: )

That is a crazy keyboard. I hope it types well.

One button mouse is a NONO for Windows (if you plan on running it), or even OS X. I don't understand why Apple can't do to their laptop pads what they did to the Mighty Mouse. A 2 button mouse disguised as a one button.

It's a shame the MacBook Pro line doesn't come in the sexy black scheme. And that keyboard looks really pretty too. Not sure about the magnetic latch it's got going on though, sounds like a nifty idea but you can see the potential for some mishaps with iron filings... maybe.

If you use the education store from a computer within a university network (or, in my case, my home computer through the university library proxy server :naughty: ) then you get a bigger discount.

I'd sell my iBook and get one right now if it didn't have the bloody GMA Graphics :(

Although I still might, depending on what they're like irl.

    Cheers to all that.

Compare the middle level macbook to the bottom level macbookpro - what's the difference?
Dedicated graphics and 2 inches of screen - that's it. Oh, and $700.
I can take that $700 and buy 2 $350 pciexpress video cards and run them in my Windoze box in SLI and get much better gaming performance than any laptop will ever have.

Look, This is an apple forum... right? So this is a place for owners and admirers etc of Apple products to talk and speculate etc.

NOT a place for you to come and slag off Apple of their pricing scheme, if you don't like how Apple have priced the MB/MBP range, then boo bloody hoo.

DreamTheEndless: Yes, while you may scoff at $700 for Dedicated GFX and an extra 2" of screen, in laptops terms this is quite a bit, and sets it apart from the other laptops of the Apple range. Also you cannot compare a laptop of any sort, beit Apple, Sony, Toshiba, whatever! to a desktop machine.

It's almost akin to comparing a McDonalds Cheeseburger to a BK XL Whopper! Each have their purposes, Laptops are designed to be portable with enough grunt to cope with day to day tasks. Desktops are designed to be workhorses, and customisable to the users needs, such as SLi GFX cards, more ram than you can shake a stick at ('scuse the pun) and enough harddrives to store the emo text files of Dashboard Confessional on a really bad day. Ok the last bit was a bit of an exageration, but the meaning still stands, want portable; buy laptop. want performance; buy desktop.

Don't mean to come off snotty, but lets face it mate, you've just come to this thread to deffocate all over it.

Amen to that, Lorquis. Except GMA950 is still very disappointing. At least a dedicated graphics chip (that didn't leech off your RAM) would've been nice.

But I will admit, that this revision is definetly the BEST iBook yet. Very competitively priced (even with Dell - despite their larger screen). This notebook is perfect for any Mac or Mac/Windows, or possibly even pure Windows user. 13" Widescreen of Core Duo goodness, and built in iSight, all for $1000ish. I can't find any reason to say not to.

My only qualms are the graphics (since I'm in no financial position to buy a laptop AND desktop), and the skimpy included Ram. They should've at least bundled 1 GB.

Whoa - You totally misinterpreted everything I said. Did you notice my post earlier where I said that I was going to buy one by the end of the summer?

All that I was trying to say is that the fact that it didn't have dedicated graphics didn't matter to me. I have a PC if I want gaming - that's not what I will be buying my MacBook for. -That if "Gaming Experience" was what you were interested in you would be better off sticking with a desktop than a laptop.

You should read some of my other posts - I am one of the most pro-mac people on bit-tech.

    I don't troll and I don't defecate in threads........

You can run windows fine with a one button mouse I do it all the time :)

And its not like you can't buy an external mouse if it annoys you either.

But for most 2-button vetrans, I'm guessing that a one button mouse is less than convenient, and carrying a bag full of accessories around sort of defies the meaning of "mobility", at least for me.

You can always do that Ctrl/Apple/# or whatever click, or click and hold, but I think Apple should still adopt a 2 button system.

Personally I use mice with loads of buttons but on a mac I find ctrl click just as easy.

I hate laptops with loads of mouse buttons, they are never easy to use, 1 button is simple to hit. :)

I've naviagated windows with no mouse at all before, it's still a pain. Of course the fact that I have this odd twitch type thing where I'll randomly right-click once in a while makes the one-button approach a bit better. It works fine in OSX, as it's designed around a one-button mouse, but trying to make use of it in XP is quite irritating.

However, Bootcamp really isn't that wonderful. On my MBP, it works, but it's severely limited in functionality. iSight doesn't work, nor does the backlit keyboard, nor the remote, and there's no great way to adjust volume or display brightness. On top of that, the GPU is crippled (underclocked massively, and atitool seems iffy at best for trying to clock it back up) and the LCD looks quite grainy. I'd imagine this is in part intentional, so people stick with OSX as much as they can (as it is, I'm liking OSX more than I ever liked Windows, so I'm not that bothered). The real problem is the lack of a delete key, so the three-finger salute is outright impossible without an external keyboard. In reality, it's not good for a whole lot other than gaming, where an external mouse is required and a seperate keyboard would be quite advisable (as the stock one is just a bit too small, and the wasd keys tend to get a bit toasty!)

Don't get me wrong - I love the thing. I'd just suggest that trying to use bootcamp/XP for anything other than strictly necessary isn't a great idea.

You can ctrl-alt-del in windows using the keyboard, its something like ctrl-shift-esc on the laptop keyboard, still i agree with the rest, the brightness was useless and it wasnt much good for watching video as it was oddly grainy and dodgy under xp...

    OK, let's get things right.

A lot of you complain about the GMA950, but it's not that bad for all the things the MacBook is supposed to do. Office-stuff and video-playback, working with Photoshop: that all is absolutely no problem.
You have to see, why they go with this solution! It consumes very little power, so that the battery will last longer. And is'nt this, what a MacBook is build for?!? Mobility!

If I only had those 1000 € to buy one :/

But it's not that bad, Is till have my trusty PB G4.
