I am looking into getting into the world of Mechanical Keyboards. I currently have a Razer Lycosa as I am a gamer, but at the moment i find myself not even looking at the back-lit keys at all. I currently use a lot of office software, as I'm writing a novel, the keys can make my fingers ache in long periods of typing. I'm not looking for anything over the £100 mark. And I know there are many brands, filco, rosewill etc. But what should i go for? I play games but don't need to look at the lettering on the keys, i don't want 'gamer' features on a board either, i don't need them. I also want to be able to personalize the keyboard with different Keycaps, and i have no idea how to approach buying these. I know I'm pretty looking for Longweight to get in on this thread, but i want to hear lots of opinions before i buy a £100 keyboard =p
Spoiler: He'll tell you to buy a Filco. And just to get a first general idea, I'd look here: http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?t=231470
Ok the two switches to look at are brown and blue. As you are writing a novel I would suggest going for blues, some people hate to game with them but others don't mind the click whilst in game. I would also recommend ANSI layout as this will allow you to use any set of custom caps, ISO is usually an add-on kit if at all. Oh and would tenkeyless be ok with you? If so I would recommend a Filco TKL with blues from the keyboardco. Where are you based?
Well i'm from UK. Can you get keycaps for ISO boards or is it severely limited to ANSI layout boards? I suppose the click wouldn't bother me, there is something.. soothing about clicky boards that i miss, but is there any issue with feedback during gaming?
I've got a SteelSeries 7G Mechanical Keyboard which I find very good for gaming, I also get my keycaps from a seller on Ebay who by all acounts supplies the guy on Geekhack forums, Obviously the seller on ebay is a fair bit cheaper.

You will usually struggle to get full key cap sets for ISO layouts. ANSI is really easy to get used to
Unfortunately it's true, if you want nice exotic and beautiful keycap sets (not just primary coloured letter keys) then you really do need to consider getting an ANSI board. Like Longweight said it's really easy to get used to!
I really do not understand the hate on blues. I have a Black widow ultimate and used it for over a year gaming. I found it much better then Logitech KB and that means a lot because I love Logitech. The issue with that board though is the board switching as the keys are in groups so 2 wasda plus ctrl doesnt work just locks up. For typing its amazing and gaming is not a problem due to the MX blues just the BWU doesn't due individual key switching like Filco does.
If you want fully custom keycap sets, then ANSI is the only way to go really. Switch type is completely personal, nothing is 'better' than anything else. And by the way, why not just post in the general mechanical keyboard thread?
I'll go ANSI, it doesn't look much different anyway. And I didn't really think about that until I posted. Then I thought " Ah, I might as well leave it now."
OK, Indeed go for an MX brown (safer option) TKL keyboard. Ordering from China is a tried and tested option that shouldn't be left aside! Many people from here have ordered from Qtans store: http://www.vendio.com/stores/E-spor.../shop-mechanical-keyboard-by-br/catId=3982936 Browse through there for something nice. The HPE 87 board looks like a bargain to me!
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not XD Because 'Machanical' is not a word, even though i spelt the title wrong XD
