I've got 3 mac laptops and an HP notebook... They all need to be wirelessley connected to the broadband, and ideally (but not essentially) sharing files...I cant use the airport system, because the notebook wont hook up to that...so what wireless system is there that allows both to be used? presumably it'll be a network and the macs will have to run off USB adapters....but netgear dont support macs do they? is there a solution that supports both?

I have no actual experience with MACs but as far as I know AIRPORT adheres to 802.11x so there is no reason why PC can't participate on that LAN. Same thing the other way around, Netgears, again adhere to 802.11x so they should be inter-operable, as far as MACs and PCs on the same LAN and able to Internet.

Now for them to share files, better post on the Apple's forum.

Airport wireless cards can connect to non airport base stations. Also viseversa a non airport 802.11x card can connect to a airport base station though its a waste of money imo as the airport base station is sub par at best.

Get the airport cards for the macs (guessing they support internals here) and they will connect fine to a netgear router. As far as the file sharing, I belive that the newer versions of OSX have the ability to file share with windows based PCs, I know for sure that they can printer share.

As Haddy said, airport cards backwards compatible with 802.11x. (They're really just Apple branded 802.11x cards) I have a PowerBook with an Airport Extreme card connected to a Netgear WAP and they work fine and with OSX I can share files back and forth with my PC.

Look on the box and see if they have drivers for Mac OSX. If they do say it then they should work.

A quick google search came up with this little datasheet...Might be interesting -> http://home.earthlink.net/~metaphyzx/Wireless.htm

I can connect to my neighbor's Airport :)D) with a linksys usb adapter, so their hardware works, as should practically anyone else.
