I am really hating acrobat as it often causes my browser to become unresponsive, or outright crash it. The only reason I stik with it over some of the other readers is the search function Acrobat has (where all instances of a serch term, plus context are shown). Is there an alternative with a similar search feature?

Why don't you just disable the in-browser opening of acrobat files? That way you can still keep the de-facto program, but don't have to worry about it crashing your browser all the time.
