Well I have finally made the move to Linux! I can't say that it has been painless (took 4 days to get it running properly!) but it was def worth it!

I'm now running Mandrake 9 and like it a lot! I just wish that they would make driver installation easier! lol.

Oh well, hello to all from a newbie and I'm sure that you will be seeing more of me in here now (asking for help and advice probably!).

    Any tips for a newbie?

Why not? I had no trouble installing it. I've got all the apps I need installed and running (xmms, ogle etc), networking installed, I've even made a custom launcher for Ogle all without a hitch! I even have WineX installed (for playing The Sims). I really am quite happy with Mandrake thanks.

    See my sig.

I'd reccomend hiding this thread from Ubermich.

Or actually a good majority of the Linux users on these boards.

We have a bit of a passionate hate for Mandick as it caused us all so many problems (actually I've never used it, but trying to help others get it working was enough to convince me it was a terrible atrocity).

Nothing would work, things were missing, it wouldn't do what we told it to . . .etc. The list goes on.

I'm a complete newbie and it's working fine for me to! Nothing missing, everything working..etc...

I had read the threads that said that Mandrake was poor but I aready had it at that point! Now WindowsXP that is poor! Mandrake up time 100%, Windows XP up time 40% with frequent reinstallations! It can't be that bad if a total windows head like me can install it and get it running right without to much difficult. Could it be the iso's that Mandrake supply for download that cause the problems? I got my distro from Linux Emporium and once I figured out that I needed to disable my network during installation (so that the installer couldn't see it) and install it once mandrake was installed everything went fine!

I really can't stress how much of a newbie I am! The idea of changing to Linux really did terrify me but I just couldn't stand MS Windows anymore! It took exception to every piece of hardware I have! After reinstalling Windows XP for the nth time I just gave up and installed Linux.

My sig says that I dual boot, this isn't really that accurate! What I have actually done is scrapped my raid array and put windows XP on one 60 gig drive and linux on the other. Put the Windows drive on a raid channel and the Linux drive on a standard Ide channel and then disable the raid in my bios. If I ever want to run Windows (lots of games on it!) I will remove the power plug from my Linux drive and enable my raid array. So far though I have been running Linux for a week and still haven't felt the need to run Windows.

I am quite sure that some people have had trouble with Mandrake (I know people who have had trouble wint Windows 2000 Pro!), but for me it works! I must just be lucky! lol.

    No.

I have no problems with gettign XMMS. Also I'm running Windwos 2000 right now, so it'd be useless :p

Also I find Windwos XP to be complete crap. Actualyl I find all Windwos except for 2000 to be horrible for me.

I agree completely about XP, it's probably the worst operating system ever devised! Unfortunately though my copy of WIndows 2000 Pro stopped working bizarrely. I think I will stick with Linux, not having any probs at all with it. Just installed Mandrake 9.1 so now my USB2 is usable!
