Magna Carta being auctioned for first time This is one of only two copies that exist outside of England. I hope somebody buys it and gives it to the public for viewing if it doesn't harm it. It would be great for it to stay here in the states as far as I'm concerned, but maybe there is a more appropriate place for it. Conservation of the document is the most important no matter where it goes. It's expected to fetch between $20 - $30 million dollars.
its most likely that it will be a museum that buys it as its very rare so would be good for them to say that they have it
OOH /me looks at the print of the magna carta on his wall would love to see this bought and then donated to a major museum or uni for public display history like this belongs to the world
I had to look at Wikipedia to see what it was: Seems important, but hardly worth $30 million. I don't mean that in a "that dvd is only worth a fiver, not £20" way, but a "I don't see how someone can sell it for real money" way, if you know what I mean...
The point is something like that is priceless... I find it odd that you dont know what it is tho, what do they do in history these days? just the nazis for 5 years in a row?
Yeah it's only the most important legal document in the history of Democracy. Nothing worth shouting about really
I only know about the magna carta because of my parents and grandparents talking about it when i was younger and then going out to research it myself. it's certainly not taught in the usual australian classes (then again we have such great history classes)
You certainly make the forums look good with active debate like that. Not everyone knows what the Magna Carta is, the important thing is he looked it up for himself. And, I think he means it's priceless, not that it's a worthless piece of paper.
That's the way I took it. It's scary to think just anybody can buy it. I mean, what if some anti-democracy organization decided to buy it and make a big show of burning it? It is priceless in that respect as well.
For that much money it'll more than likely be someone private rather than a public institution could either be a private collector who'll hide it away or is the chance they'll buy it to display in a musem of there choice which imo would be a better move cant beat Englands first constitution.
Would it matter? Burning the Magna Carta would not erase the foundations of democracy. Only by our appalled reactions would such an act succeed in its goal. -monkey
