The Catholic school I went to was 15 minutes or so for a walk. Yeah, it could be a pain, but it wasn't bad at all, especially when meeting up with friends for the trek. A lot of bonding took place then. Middle school was only 2 blocks from the house and then high school was a bit over a mile's walk again. In high school, riding my bike was a great alternative, plus I used it for getting to and from work during that time. I didn't have a car until age 21.

I wouldn't trade the time spent with friends walking to and from school for anything in the world. Ah, memories.

for me, boarding school would be the ultimate lose. Never experienced it first hand but I can't say as it appeals to me.

Fully agree with the OP. Especially in Belfast, where two major 2-lane arteries out of the city are reduced to 1 lane on a daily basis due to a single school. Cycling is the way to go, we don't have that many hills.

i hate walking, it's such a waste of time. kids should ride their bikes to school.

back in grade school, i rode year round unless there was more than 4" of fresh snow or it was below -20ºC. it took about 10min to drive to school, or 5min to bike there cutting through all the alleyways. and as a bonus all the teachers felt so bad for me for "having" to bike to school that they didn't mind if i was late, so i could sleep in.

I could understand why some people would be against it, but for me, it really is ultimate win though. :p

And that was the same for me, so much fun these nights were! As for getting to school I could wake up at 8.39am and be ready for form opposite at 8.40am with a brunch bar for breakfast. :D

I do agree that kids who can should walk to school if its something like 20 minutes away or less otherwise I think they and the parents are being selfish hogging the road. There are obviously exceptions such as disability, the school being 10 miles away or dangerous country roads to walk on. Just because people now have cars does not mean it should be used all the time!

Wait, I wasn't kidding. My mum was a teacher at the other end of the county and she left at 7am, I had to sort out my own breakfast and lunch from a very early age.

    'i' should be a capital 'I'.

I know that I can't talk about spelling though.

I used to walk to school all the time, it was good fun walking to school and knocking for friends on the way.

Like a little mini social before and after school.

Now I drive to college/uni, its about 9 miles down the parkway, but if I was to bike it would have to be a completly different route, so I would have to get up an hour earlier. And you can forget walking.

When I went back before the kids went back to school the roads where completly clear. Which reinforces the OP's point, most of the traffic is people taking kids to school, now ok if they live far away fair enough, but I see people coming out of a street or section of streets which is a dead end, dropping off kids on the corner opposite school and then causing the traffic to stop while they turn around in the road and go back down the street. These children couldn't possibly have to walk more than 5 minutes to school, yet they get dropped off.

    Plus I hate small children.

What's worse is when the parents drive the kids to the bus stop 2 blocks away, and just park there and let the kids sit inside the heated/airconditioned idling car until the bus arrives.

Walking is so much more relaxing than driving too... you go at a more relaxed pace, you don't really have to worry about other drivers, it's just nicer.

I haven't driven in about a month... don't really miss it.

Walking is more relaxing than cycling maybe but damn if a bike isn't so much more fun. Especially on my way home, I'd given up the school bus in 6th year when it became infested with small shouty annoying people, so cycled the 3 miles up a ******* hill every morning. Quite the wakeup, but so worth it when it meant I overtook the school buses on the way back home :D

Some schools around here have "walking busses" which is basically a few routes the teachers follow, to collect some kids each that live locally, and they all walk to school together. So it's safe, less traffic, and if it's raining then they all take umbrellas.

But for longer commutes, it's the same for students and workers alike - the best solutions include busses, trains & car pooling.

Most of the adults i see each morning in traffic, are not car pooling with anyone on their way to work, driving an oversized suv, really slowly to save on petrol :grr: instead of just driving an economical compact car, or putting the suv to good use and CAR POOL YOU STUPID F@$#%@&#!!!!!

:eeek: excuse me! deep breath ....... aahhh, i'm ok now

Why not? It seems that pregnant women should walk because some people don't want to. :p

No, Nexxo, pregnant women are like that by their own fault; walking is their punishment. Kids on the other hand, are born as kids and have no choice in the matter.

    Or something.

Softies. Children should walk to school for at least ten miles, on their bare feet, dragging huge lumps of rock behind them, over hot coal and broken glass. While a slave driver whips them. :p
