I fully agree with the OP, The three schools on my way to work all have buckloads of cars out side but one of them is on a very busy road and it blocks the buses trying to get round the corner thus backing the traffic up further. And people getting on the bus with buggies for a 3 stop journey that would take less time to walk than waiting on the bus then waiting on the next one because that one is full/already has a buggy buggering around to get the thing on, buggering around to get the thing off.... ARGGHHH!

    Sorry, feel better now.

    Rock... you lucky barsteward...

make them walk, its a waste of resources having a billion parents driving their kids to school everyday, just because little johnny doesnt want to get up earlier. learn to control your kids ffs and they wont be the little shits they are nowadays. half-ass parenting at its worst.

this is starting to sound like the four yorkshire men monty python sketch (linky) I walked to school, i walked to college and now i walk to uni. I enjoy it, it allows me to wake up properly and helps me get a little extra exercise.

Think it's meant to be, evilelephant.

Ten miles? Bah, i had to walk for ten miles over shark-infested lava to get to the path of hot coals and broken glass dragging a whole pallet of bricks and being disembowled at every step. Then once we got to tar pits at end of path we had to build the school using the bricks we brought, then learn as fast as we could or get dragged under with the sinking building...

I used to walk to school when I was in the 1st grade up until the 5th grade. The fact that I lived across the road/street from school might have played a small part in my walking...

I did get yelled at more than the other kids when I was late for school thought. I don't think the teachers understood how you could be late if it took you 40 seconds to get from your house to the school gate

That's a surprisingly bad post compared with your normal standard Nexxo. And in that other thread, people aren't arguing that pregnant women should walk so they don't have to, they're arguing that pregnant women shouldn't displace people who're actually disabled from the disabled parking spaces, because disabled people need them and deserve them more.

    I have it real hard.......

I have to get up walk downstairs and start school (is homeschooled)

But I do agree we all should walk more. Makes me sick hearing about people driving their kids to school when the school is only a 15 minutes away. Though I have a friend that lives 30 miles away from the school he goes to and when it is winter his mom does drive him down to the end of their driveway(Drive way is half mile long) to wait for the bus. I can understand that, but some of the other stories I don't.

Actually the OP in that thread was arguing that society was getting lazier and pregnant women should walk, there was no mention about displacing disabled people from reserved spaces, whether they be parking spaces or seats on public transport.

Krazeh is right. That whole thread started because some fit young male felt that pregnant women were displacing him. Here people are arguing that kids being driven to school are displacing them from the roads.

Now you make the valid argument:

    Same difference.

I used to walk to school. It's not much to say, though, because I lived (quite literally) next door to it.

That said, I was once given a lift to an exam by a teacher..

When I was in elementary school I walked since it was only 5ish minutes away, during middle school I rode my bike year round. However, by the time I was old enough to drive I enjoyed not having to freeze for 15 minutes during the winter and walk/ride in the dark to school when I could just drive the car.

The 6 years in secondary school, I went by bus. Primary school, I walked - Swanton Morley to Norfolk District and then Spiekergarten to Andrew Humphries in Blankenhagen. I also used to walk from Barron Street in Darlington to DCOT, about a two mile walk each way. I didn't realise at the time, but each time I went to and from, I passed by the hospital my Dad was born in! I also walked to Teesside Uni from Park Road North (not far, admittedly) and also Lothian Road (a little bit further).

I agree with the OP. Sadly, it looks like the days of several coaches/buses taking kids to school are gone. There's only one bus from Bourne in the morning packed to the gills with schoolchildren. But, there are too many 4x4's with mum at the wheel and little Jimmy sat in the passenger seat round here. You really do notice a BIG difference when it's half term or other school holidays. Even if there was a bit of car pooling it'd make a heck of a difference.

I walked to school, 20 minute walk is great to clear your head.

Now I take the bicycle to work, 20 km is a bit much to walk. Offcourse I drive around in a van the whole day at my work but is not the point :hehe:

logic in taking your kid to school by car= (violence index + rapist index+ paedophile index+distance to school+ bad climate index)/(good public transportation+clogged road index)

i see no logic in taking your kid to school if the area is relatively safe, the distance is less then 2Km, the climate is not bad.

as for me.... i used to walk until i entered the university and now i take the bus, saves me time and money.
IF the university was at the same distance BUT the terrain was less extreme, drivers were a little more responsible and climate was not as rainy in the winter i would certainly ride my bicycle.

I would like it to be know i walk alot, as my parents both have jobs and its hard for them to pick me up.
However, have you seen the sidewalks? There about 3 feet wide, with traffic wizzing by at over 25 mph. Its not exactly walker friendly. And huge intersections made for firetrucks. Walking is not fun, trust me.

I still have no idea what's the huge problem here. I don't drive a car so I wouldn't mind even if the parking lot alltogether was two kilometers away from the store. Atleast nobody would bother whining if they had to leave their cars on the far edge of the lot.

My opinion is that the pregnant women are already having a hard time enough, so why not give them some priviledges? It's not like a couple of parking spaces reserved for them would make a huge difference. A healthy young man can easily walk the extra ten meters to his car. Just buy an ice cream and you won't even notice the extra steps you have to make because you don't happen to be a pregrnant woman!
