Anyone got any good ideas on how to make these horrible looking bits of metal look nice when seen thru a window?

4 intake fans, I feel sorry for you, I bet you have to dust your case a lot. I have 4 intake fans also and man, is there a lot of dust quick.

As for the metal on the 5 1/4" bays, I would paint it, or maybe see if I can find a couple old slot A heatshinks, cut them short, and use them as a covering. Maybe EL sheet would work, or EL wire to accent it.

what about getting a uv colde cathode and painting the metal a uv reactive color

(dont know if its the best price never needed it so never searched for it

    you could:
    a) polish them
    b) give them a brushed effect
    c) paint them
    d) paint them with uv reactive apint
    e) paint them with normal paint, then with clear nail varnish (uv reactive :D)
    f) as e) but without the paint
    g) do some artwork on then
    h) cover them up with a peice of tinted/sanded/painted/artworked perspex
