Can I make a 3 way headphone splitter by just connecting three earphones in parallel? I am running this from a laptop, is there any chance of my blowing it by drawing too much current?
I don't think you can draw to much from the headphone jack. If it doesn't have the power it will not create audio or sound underpowerd. to split it you may need a amp but at that point you can buy a spliter with an amp it it
Sorry to answer my own question, I just made it and it works and with no noticable loss of sound (And I used my shuffle, so not exactly powerful) The reason I need 3, is that I am going (driving) to the french alps to ski at half-term, and need to watch films the entire way, but my two sisters need to listen too. Its going to be such a good journey, we have the latest Harry Potter audiobook, loads of films, two series of I'm sorry I have't a clue... But thanks for the replies, I really don't want to burn out the laptop. EDIT: Jazzle? Buy something I could make in two minutes? Where's your modding spirit?
his parents are, duh. he's 13. and it's only illegal to wear headphones while driving 'cause some idiot american tried it and got in an accident. european drivers are like apples and oranges compared to american drivers. which isn't to say there aren't accidents and bad drivers. everyone has thier morons.
14 actually, and talking of apples and oranges, it is illegal to eat fruit while drving in the uk, a woman got a fine for eating an apple, not for bad driving. It cost them £60,000 to prosecute her, but she got a £200 fine. That's law for you.
The illegal bit is watching a video while you're driving. Still silly, but the offence was not being in proper control. And I bet she'd given the cops some lip too.
Except that's he's not the driver. As for the technical issue, it depends on the headphones and the the amplifier. The laptop amp is also expected to drive the internal speakers (though usually not at good quality) which are likely 8 ohms. Cheap headphones are 32 ohms and some better ones are 100 ohm. 3 sets of cheap headphones will be about 11 ohms in parallel, above the 8 ohm rating of the amp.
Confused Fishcake, Have a nice holiday! Just remember that while you are enjoying the Alps the rest of us are sweating it out at our workplace ARM
Ive seen the datasheets for some amp chips for laptops etc... unfortunately they have a seperate headphone hookup usually. Because they use a push-pull setup for the speakers, and a single-ended amp for the headphones. Of course its worth a try to see if it still works, but I wouldnt be surprised if it didnt.
Yep works, I just got back from Bristol, 3 hours each way and it worked fine. I had a slight issue with a bad soldering joint, bu I'll have that fixed by friday.
i found a 2 way at a dollar store, baught three u can chain em together lol it works with my sisters ipod. plus its white so it kinda looks like an ipod accessory.
