2gig ram, 76/8/9 series or 1800 series gfx (GTO??), dual core cpu, pioneer dvdrw, lg tft, wd raptor, aria case. Down to personal preference really.
alright is there a big diff between X2 - 4200+ : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103547 X2 - 4400+ : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103546 Opty 170 : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103586 4200 + = L1: 2x128 kb L2: 2x512 kb 2.2 Ghz $357 4400 + = L1: 2x128 kb L2: 2x1 mb 2.2 Ghz $458 Opty 170 = L1: 2x128 kb L2: 2x1 mb 2.0 Ghz $396
Here we go... MB - Asus A8R-MVP Crossfire/Asus A8N-SLi SE CPU - AMD 3800/4200 X2 RAM - 2Gb of branded (like geil, cosair .etc) H.D. - hitachi 250Gb s-ATA DvD Writer - not sure tbh, anything that can do alot of formats/speeds at a low price. PSU - ULTRA UV GREEN 500 watt (already have) VGA - X1800 GTO/7800 GT CASE - Something Lian li would be noce but it's totally up to you Enjoy -Fr4nk
I'd suggest the 64-X2_3800+ or 4200+ (same as Fr4nk) as these are very good dual-core CPUs and are generally good o/c'ers too. Having 1MB cache is nice but it only makes a very small difference and isn't worth forking out for IMHO. Opteron won't really offer you anything the A64 doesn't offer, just a higher asking price and most likely lower resale price too. For the mobo I'd suggest the nForce4 chipset, SLI version if you think you may want that at some future point. As for brand DFI are still tops AFAIK while MSI offer a very good and cheaper alternative. For the RAM something of a decent brand PC3200 is more than fine, 2GB if it doesn't push your budget too much. For the HD I'd suggest 300GB which offers a good size to price ratio, as for brand I'd personally avoid Hitachi (unreliable) and go for Seagate, Maxtor or Samsung. For DVD Writer any Pioneer or NEC. For the case anything capable of taking larger fans (ideally 120mm) is the most important factor, most of the other options are all about personal preference. For the gfx card a 6800GS, 7800GT, 7900GT, X1800XL, X1800XT or X1900XT depending upon budget or nVidia/ATi preference. For gaming the gfx card is the key component, but even the cheapest of those options (6800GS) is still very capable at any game currently out there.
i agree, opterons have become really expensive and all that they do is offer a bit more cache. Anyway what does IMHO mean?
In my honest opinion. I'd still go for a 1meg cache over 512k, simply because you can add clock speed but you cant add cache.
So long as you aren't paying too much for the priviledge as it does only make a tiny difference. There's quite a few A64 options with 1MB cache so it's not exclusive to Opterons, they're more about very intensive in-house testing to ensure they are perfect for mission critical situations.
I never said Opteron Only $800, well, gig of ram, 3500 and Nforce 4 board with a 7600, 160gig SATA drive, any DVDRW.
$800 should be just about enough for; Athlon64-X2_3800+, MSI nF4-Ultra/SLI, 1-2GB Corsair Value PC3200, 300GB Seagate, 16x Pioneer DVD Writer, decent case with 120mm fan mounts and a GF-6800GS although a 7800GT would be nice if possible. I'd personally recommend going for 1GB esp if it helped to get the 7800GT or to avoid dropping dual-core if the budget gets that tight. Bindibadgi I was just trying to make it clear Opteron isn't the only 1MB option. EDIT: www.newegg.com $295 64-X2_3800+ $76 MSI Neo4 Platinum nForce4-Ultra (SLI is $70 refurb or $102 new) $67 2x512MB Corsair Value PC3200 CL2.5 ($140 for 2x1GB PC3200 CL3.0) $118 300GB Seagate SATA ($95 for 250GB version) $38 Pioneer 16x DVD Writer $55 Case (personal preference) $169 6800GS ($285 for 7800GT, $320 for 7900GT) TOTAL $818 ex shipping (or $795 if you go for a 250GB Seagate).
for a VGA, i reccomend getting a 7600, it seems like a cracking card for its price, and 2 in SLi is a very good possbility- I would get one over a 6800GS any day of the week- again- perfonal preferance! Mankz
The 7600GT which has been out for less than a week is certainly nice and does offer the minor enhancements of the GF7 series although that's mostly just in HDR. As you can see below the 7600GT does have a 32% faster core but the 6800GS has 43% more memory bandwidth. It doesn't seem as though the lack of memory bandwidth holds the 7600GT back much as it tends to outperform the 6800GS by 10-15% (more in HDR). Currently on Newegg 7600GT=$190 6800GS=$170 which is a price difference of 12% making it pretty even but I would lean towards the 7600GT myself. 6800GS Core=5100+531 RAM=32.0 7600GT Core=6720+700 RAM=22.4
