i am thinking about makeing a wired remote for my computer to control winamp through it and i want to add my main speakers volume control to it... but im not sure what components i would need.... i cant remember the model of my speakers but i no its a creative 5.1 speaker set... ive looked on their site but cant seem to find it.. anyways... it has a led to indicate its on and a turn dial for the volume control with a click for on/off when you rotate it anti clockwise... as for the connection to the sub it looks like a s-video sort of connector.. a biggish rectangle in the middle and 6 pins surrounding it...

can any one help me make my own one for this mod?

    Hi Springs,
I did something similar to my Altec Lancings speakers, see:
    http://www.bit-tech.net/article/105/

In your case, from your description, your speakers does not have digital volume control but analogue (variable resistor which doubles as an on-off). the best way to make the remote is to open the speakers and duplicate the variable resistor wiring to an external variable resistor (of the same type). Pretty much the same way I have done, but instead if using buttons, you will be using a varaible resistor (which you should be able to get at any electronics shop).
    Hope this helps.

    Rgds.

well i have ripped open the volume control to my speakers... of what i can see, it has a variable resistor, 4 resistors, green LED and a 5 pin connector for the power etc...

of the resistors i can see..
    1. purple, orange, gold
    2. gold, red, green, brown
    3. gold, orange, brown

i cant really see the last one.... its at the wrong angle to see.. cant seem to get the pcb board off without unsoldering half the board....

can anyone give me the resistor amounts?

    Hi again Springs,
What you need is the variable resistor, the rest of the components are not important.
Buy a similar var. resistor as the board (the body marking is usually at the rear of the resistor, maybe something like 'B150K', meaning log scale 150 Kilo Ohm {correct me if I am wrong on the 'B', I know that var. resistors used as volume control are log scale}.
Wire the var. resistor at the board to the other variable resistor which will be your external volume control lead to lead. You did not mention how many pins is your var. resistor, but I imagine it to be a minimum of 6 pins (3 for pins for left volume, 3 for right).
Hope you understand what I am saying, reply back if you don't - I will try to take a picture of an example which will explain it more clearly.

    Good luck

    thanks for the reply....

first off the var. resistor has 5 pins
second... i cant see any markings on the var. resistor the way its put 2gether its more or less impossible to see any markings if any with out removing it from the board...
