Isn't there a web site that lists all the known urban myths?

Anyway, this was last posted over 6 months ago and I thought it might be funny to others. Hope people don't mind that I bumped it.

Ok, I missed it. I was thinking the URL itself would have been more enlightening then that.

However, after investigating the myth, I found out that the man that was sent to prison for two years was killed in a fight over a book of matches.

    :D

I don't understand how he can be charged for arson. Insured property or not, surely it's up to you if you want to smoke cigars?

Let's say this story was true. The man would be charged for arson because he insured his cigars against fire. He then went and smoked his cigars by lighting them on fire. He then turns the insurance claim in. Since he purposely caught the cigars on fire, that would be arson since he was also using it to defraud the insurance company and basically smoke expensive cigars for free.

Yes, but setting purposely setting fire to an insured property in order to get money out of the insurance company is fraud. And indeed setting fire to an insured property whether it be cigars or not and trying to claim it would lead to a prison sentence.

If the guy smoked it but did not claim it off the insurance then he wouldn't have been sent to prison. I saw that coming before I got to the part where he was arrested.

EDIT: Shame its a myth though :(

Bah, bloodcar beat me to it, you owe me five minutes :grr:

Who said that there were any eye witnesses. A wife could not be forced to testify. If she told somebody else that her husband smoked the cigars then all it would be is hearsay. That in and by itself would not be prosecutable.

After all, the story says that the man filed a claim that said, "the cigars were destroyed in a series of small fires." He never admitted to guilt.

    :D

Who knows? The wife could have smoked each one, and the man comes home to find nothing but ashes. The wife spreads gossip about her husband being the culprit.

    :duh:
