Well, first of all where are you trying to make folders? If its anywhere other than your user's home directory then you won't have the right permissions. If you su/login to "root" then you should be able to make folders anywhere...

Why do you want to do it though? You shouldn't need to make folders outside your own home directory, unless you have some kind of storage partition somewhere.

The command you need is "chmod" which will alter a file/folder's permissions. Google for a better description- but use wisely- the root account is there for a reason!!

    Erm...No.

If you are trying to install software then you *probably* want to do it as root. I'm afraid I don't know much about mandrake (I use Gentoo- which has an absolutely kickass package management system called Portage). You probably want to do a google for something like "mandrake +install +software"- or wait for someone who knows exactly what they're doing. An explanation of what it is you're trying to do (i.e install software, or what) would help too.

    Cheers

Why would you want to have your user have more permissions though? That is what the root account is for! If you really must have your user have permissions to do everything, then just use root as your normal user...but don't blame me when something breaks!

Otherwise, I would just use the chmod command when necessary!

You want your normal user to have root permissions?

Whats the difference between that and just running as root?

I'm not entirely sure how to change all your user permissions to that of root, but if you open a terminal, then type "su" it will ask you for your root password and then you will effectively be running as root within your normal user environment...
