4k monitors will not reduce the need for high end gpu power mantle or no mantle.

I'd echo not to worry about mantle. You are better off worrying about your lady friend seeing the invoices.

i'm not sure where i suggested that it'd mean that things would run fabulously on a pos gfx card with everything maxed out at 4K...???

To explain the thought process -

'if' the 45% fps boost were to be there in the games that you wanted to play then it should make using a single top end card playable...

(bearing in mind that the min fps with many games doesn't appear to improve by anything like 45% by using a 2nd 290X in crossfire or a 2nd 780Ti in sli at 4K...

...& that the 45%, assuming it's valid, is from the 1st patched game, not a game explicitly written for mantle post the initial learning curve)

...which would then mean that you could halve the price to get a (mostly) reasonable experience - perhaps lowering a couple of settings to make it more consistent.

Or, with optimised crossfire/sli support, a pair of cheaper cards could become eminently viable.

Or, by lowering more settings, it wouldn't be wholly unreasonable to suggest that a model or two down could become a viable option.

Now, accepting the lowering of settings a bit is, i believe, an entirely reasonable premise, since neither all of the current gfx cards nor all of the older ones that people may have can allow things to be maxed out at lower resolutions... So clearly people are prepared to run games without all of the graphical bells & whistles enabled.

Hence my explicit point was that it would "(at least potentially) allow a reasonable 4K experience without spending a fortune"...

...not that it would allow you to max everything out at 4K using shonky h/w.
