Well yes and no! The main reason is to protect the tube itself. they are very brittle........ The cold cathodes from pcmods or anywhere like that come in a protective tube.............
but as soon as its in situe I dont think it matters that much, either way, better safe than sorry really I am gonna get some tube for mine, but only becasue of the light properties
