I think I explained it too vaguely... I am using the admin ($) shares to access certain parts of my media server. For example, the My Documents on one user on my laptop uses \\fileserver\k$, instead of the standard 'docs and settings\user\my docs'. I wont be removing the admin ($) shares on the media server, but I'll be using normal shares (\\fileserver\k) for the laptop instead. Hopefully it'll stop the slow response.

As for spyware/virus etc. that's not a problem, as it's all regularly up-to-date and the drive is defragged often (on both server and laptop). If it was a virus/spyware problem, it would affect the other two users on my laptop, but they're fine.

I was meant to sort all this out at the weekend (and install my new printer) but I had to visit the in-laws :worried:

I've solved it - turns out that having my 'My Documents' for each user as '\\fileserver\My Documents' (i.e. stored on a network) caused the huge delay when accessing 'My Computer'.

I've since removed them, and restored the default, with links to the network folders within. This solved it, but is kinda annoying, as it's not how I originally intended. Yet another example of Windows Networking working as intended.
