Hey, I'm looking at getting a Matrix Oribtal to fit on a single bay cover on the front of my case. I have never owned or have any experience with these so I don't really know what to look for. I would like to just to the basic stuff like displaying temperatures, winamp songs and stuff like that. I'd also prefer the backlit to be blue instead of green. Which one would be the best for me? thanks.

Thanks for helping me narrow my choices down. Would the USB one be easier to install and use? That's the one I'm looking at getting...

    Thanks again...

http://www.bit-tech.net/review/177/ for my opinion of the USB display :)

Better than the RS232 in a number of ways, though about the only one you'll notice if you're not wanting any more than you say, is the connectivity.

The bundle does come with a bay insert and LCDC, so if you were planning on buying these anyway thenit'll be cheaper for you (though again LCDC probably isn't worth your money if you're. not wanting anything complicated).

Vastly easier. Look at the MX202 and 212.

Cheese's review of the MX214 is relevant too, since it only differs in color.

Here's a quick pic to get your drooling. The backlight color is not uneven at all despite what the pic shows.

Thanks for the review and the reply cheese....and linear. The thing is that I have a clear case from clearpc.ca and I would like to place the Matrix Orbital into clear single bay cover instead of using the one from the MX2 series. The LK202-24-USB-WB is really looking good to me right now but will I really lose the functionality if I don't use the face plate with the buttons? Thanks.

Yes, that's what I was thinking as well... ;) hehe, also, I'm a little confused, did you guys say that the LK202-24-USB-WB actually comes with the bay keypad or is it just the MX2's that do....Thanks.

Heh, thanks. Ok, I'm just trying to get things clear here.

    - You're telling me that the blue one on this page http://www.matrixorbital.com/products/lk202-24-USB.htm comes with the keypad?

    - Can I remove the keypad?

    - Would I be able to function it without the keypad?

    Thanks so much...

Actually, you cant get the combo straight from MO....well you prolly could but they offer it to resellers only because the the price diff between their page and reseller cost. Anyway, there are only 2 stores carrying the combos now, and one happens to be the site I work for! yay!

Anyway, MO just released their lcd drive inserts, cut from brushed aluminum!

check my sig for the site :D

No, that comes with a USB cable only. It's keypad capable though, in case you wanted to add one, it uses a 4x6 keypad.

Yes, they are quite functional without the keypad, but the keypad is one of the features that set the MO product apart.

Thanks, I'm really trying to take my time and find the perfect one for me and you guys are helping a great deal. I have two bays that are being unused and I'm thinking about going bigger, like 20x4, is it worth it to take that much more room or is it really not worth giving up an extra bay for two more lines?

    http://www.matrixorbital.com/products/lcd2041.htm

It's cheaper than the 20x2 but this one's serial, does it make much of a difference?

Tell me what you guys think I should....thanks.

2041 is way more stripped down.

1 GPO instead of 6. No keypad. It's purely an output device, unlike the other ones you've been looking at. I'd suggest that if you want a 4x20 (and don't want to wait for a USB) the LK204-25 family is much smarter.

Compare the features across families on this page.

    > this one's serial, does it make much of a difference?

Once you're up and running, no. It's mainly about ease of installation. The power connections on all the pre-USB (dare I say legacy?) models is a connector that looks like a floppy power header, but has the pins in different locations. That sucks, cause if you plug a floppy molex into it, bzzzzt. Quite often your display dies. I've never killed one, but I know a lot of them have died. With USB, power and signal in one cable, and if you use the separate power to get the high-power GPO features, it's a standard floppy connector (at last). It's way easier to connect, but once it's connected you can't tell them apart. (In the pic I link above, the lower one is serial, only the upper one is USB. Could you tell?)
