A neighbors 500gig version stopped working the other day and have given it to me to find out why.. but I am stumped. If I plug it in, nothing happens on the PC side of things (no "new hardware found etc) it doesn't show in device manager or disk manager. The only sign of life is the green light on it, which just flashes really fast continually -- which I am sure isn't right. Anyone have any ideas?
The only thing I can suggest is to go through the troubleshooting on the maxtor/seagate website, but this doesn't surprise me of a maxtor product tbh. Check the cable, connectors at both end and if it doesn't have a warranty left whip it out and try it without the box.
Some Maxtor products are fine. I have had many Maxtor HD's with no problems at all. Try the HD out of the box, as mentioned above. If it works it could be a faulty enclosure.
It is only ~2weeks old though so wouldn't want to trash the warranty (that is even if PCWorld *shudder* keeps it!) Changed cables though and it didn't help. The odd thing is that it _did_ work as the dude backed up all his stuff to it, then it failed a couple of days later..
