Well I have seen a few Ferrari mods kicking around. However, I hate Ferrari, so I was thinking I should try a mod for my favourite F1 team: McLaren Mercedes. It will be base on this car: My ideas: The side panel will have a rectangular window more towards the top with the McLaren Logo etched into and the panel will be glossy black. The front panel will have a red rim around it like that of the nose cone on the car. Then the drive bay area will be silver and the area below will be glossy black again, with a hole for a fan and the fan grill will be the mercedes logo. I was thinking of having two different colours of lighting perhaps blue and green. To control this I am thinking of taking up a spare drive bay and putting switches in it, these to control different lighting and then below that a fan controller (this is to be a bit like all the gadgetry on the steering wheel). Is it possible to switch the lighting of LED Fans on and off? That leaves me without ideas for the top panel and the remaining side panel, what could I do with these. What ways are there that I could put a logo onto my case for different sponsors? Thanks for any input and ideas on the two spare panels.
Firstly, subscribed as I'm very interested in this - having undertaken a Ferrari mod, and looking to do a Renault F1 mod this spring. Secondly, I'm 99% sure it's possible to switch on/off the LEDs on lit fans - simply re-wire them so that they can be switched. Or turn the whole fan off using a switch. Thirdly, for the top panel, you could try and integrate a nose cone - similar to what Boss:FX-57 has? And sponsor logos in the same colour on the other sidepanel - to give it a subtle look?
HMMM, the pictures of that mod don't seem to show so I can't really give an opinion I'm afraid. I am thinking about using the side panel to put on the sponsor logos (Siemens, Johnny Walker, Mobil 1, possibly some more) but I don't really know how to do this as I am not accomplished enough to do it by airbrush as I don't have very artistic skills. Any ideas? A Nose cone on top is quite a good idea but maybe my skills are again a little bit lacking although maybe putting a little Corgi MP421 on top. I am also not sure about going for Watercooling or not? IF I do I was thinking I could go for a dual radiator on top and cut out two holes for it and make an exhaust pipe if you know what I mean. But then again there is the problem of teh PSU getting in the way of that, input on that aswell? Anyway thinking about starting the project I have my preliminary exams coming up in a couple of weeks and then a birthday a few weeks after that so I will maybe start it after these exams. There is however a slight problem that might make me not do this project. The driver that I idolised has buggered off to Ferrari and I detest Fernando Alonso (looks like my affections will now have to lie with Hamilton). Oh Well!!
Wow, Lazlow I just looked at your profile...I thought the name Matthew Juffs and Ferrari Mod rang a bell...your mod was in Custom PC a couple of months ago. Much as hate Ferrari that was really nice work. Even if the project never gets going it is nice to know that I have an award winning modder who likes my ideas.
Vinyl stickers/decals. Check eBay as there are several shops on there that do custom orders - it's where I picked up the two Ferrari vinyl stickers. I'd leave the model to sit next to the mod - putting the radiator at the top, along with a nose cone would work pretty well. Whereas on an F1 car the nose cone takes in the air, you'd use it to exhaust the air through the radiator(s)? But it's entirely up to you. You can also check out Tech Daddy's pictures on the bit-tech article. Don't rush anything, spend as much time as you want to plan the mod. And good luck for the exams! Thanks for the compliments!
Well, rather than a nose cone I was thinking of making an exhaust pipe like that from the engine on F1 cars. However this would have to be more towards the front of the case as the power supply would be in the way of the radiator. Thanks for the info about Decals, I have found Mobil 1 and Michelin but I can't get Siemens and Johnnie Walker, anybody know a place that does custom ones cheap? I was also thinking about using chrome split loom as this would make the inside look a bit like an engine, especially with wc-ing aswell. One more question I need a case for this and I don't know what is best, it has to be cheap and also a blank canvas, also how big does it need to be for just a regular CPU only watercooling setup?
Well I think I have decided against the watercooling as it adds a lot more money to the bill and more work aswell. So it will be a completely fan cooled system, can anybody post links to or pictures of diagrams of the most effective cooling and how fans should be laid out?
This is a rough look at my idea, what do people think? The exhausts on topp will be slante but I coudn't get that effect in sketchup.
Personally, I wouldn't have the picture of the actual car on the side. While you got the color scheme, consider some white. The general color of that car is a black-to-white gradient, so perhaps consider that for your black areas, as opposed to just solid black. Otherwise, keep working on it. I think this theme will be a welcome change, and definetly something to look forward to.
Well I don't think I will go for white, but the silver should be a lot shinier than that, I was just limited to the flat colours of sketchup. I have to say I am not too happy with the image of the car on the side either, but I can't think of anything to go in its place. Any ideas on this?
Well, after a little look at the news it seems that McLaren have changed some of their sponsors, and the new car is going to be released mid-January and I won't be able to start before then anyway, so I may wait to see what happens with that before I finalise any designs.
Take a look at the lines of the car and try to apply them on your case somewhere. I don't see how your current plans for your exhaust (slanted or not) represent that car. The Titanic, maybe, but not the car. Perhaps try your hand at some Bondo work and make intake/exhausts that are a mock up of the ones on the car. I would also think that Mercedes fan grills are a must.
As I said, I am going to wait for the new car to come out as the paint work could be completely different now as it was completely different last year.
I think it needs more of a form to it, because F1 cars are so sleek and perfectly aerodynamic that making a rectangle case wouldn't do justice. Also, maybe a mini spoiler on the case? Maybe make it look a bit like a car but obvious that it is not supposed to be a car, if you catch my drift.
HMMM, yeah I was thinking of a rear wing, might be a good touch, but I just don't want to make it too complicated. I see what you mean about curvature, but at the same time I still want to base it on a proper PC case (a cheap case) but maybe a bit of filler work wouldn't go amiss.
Well this is the brand new car, looks really nice, but there is now almost no black whatsoever. HMMM, time to rethink, any ideas.
Meh, I like the old car better. The orange and silver on the new one aren't very appealing compared to the red-silver-black combination. I say stick with the current colour scheme.
I admit you are right about the colours but the new one does look a lot sleeker and less like they have just stuck random things on it to make it more aerodynamic.
Rather than simply putting a pic of the car on the side, why not etch it into the plexi, or better yet, the aluminum.
