You need a new keyboard with heavier switches i.e. blacks as I suggested above, there is nothing that you can easily do to that board to change the lightness of the red switches.

I suspected that might well be the case. But what of these O rings I have come across or do they just dampen sound?

They just dampen the sound when you bottom out (hit the keys really hard).

You will probably get around £60 for the K60 on here which might get you a keyboard with black switches.

I know it all feels a bit esoteric, but it's worth reading Longweight's guide to mechanical keyboards to understand your options and make the best choice for you.

I have done but to be honest it is impossible to know what best suits unless one can try all the various options. I certainly did not want to spend a hundred+ on a keyboard which I decided was not for me. This particular KB came up on the FS forum at ,what I thought was a reasonable price but have discovered that the reds are to sensitive for my tastes. I couldn't have known that before I bought or tried this particular switch. Whether I will sell and try a keyboard with black switches is debatable. I may well just persevere with this or go back to the usual type of KB.

I've had my current keyboard and mouse for ages (Logitech wireless keyboard and lh mx610 mouse) and both are getting quite battered so was planning on replacing them, and after reading quite a lot about mechanical keyboards rather tempted by one.

Ideally I'd like a ten key less one with separate number pad, but mechanical (might as well do it properly if I'm doing it at all) number pads seem unnecessarily expensive - £50 or so which in no way matches the slight saving from a smaller keyboard. If reasonably priced no pads don't exist then would be happy with a full sized one (need a no pad for quite a lot of excel and cad), thinking mx browns for a mixture of typing/games etc.

A built in USB hub of some sort would be nice to have and I don't really want anything that is too flashy (what companies seem to think "gamer" things should be). The filco majestetouch look good and possibly the das keyboard but was wondering if there were any other options I might have missed, easily available in the uk and in iso layout and given the prices want to make sure I don't see something I would have preferred later.

Thanks for any help, longweight's guide was useful but want to make sure I haven't missed any good keyboards out.

Ok... I use a logitech numberpad which has chiclet switches and does the job very well for £20! I would get a TKL board and a cheap USB numberpad, you can always buy a better one at a later date :)

You can't go wrong with the Filco, I haven't heard anyone say that it wasn't worth it!

    Great suggestions Longweight!

I would personally also take the CM Storm Quickfire Rapid with MX Browns into account at Scan. Not sure if they are still pre-order but the keyboard is of Filco quality (I can't tell the difference) except with excessive branding on the caps that people may not like.

If you change the caps the problem disappears, as you can see here it is very simplistic (my own CM, which is an ANSI US layout):

Actually scratch that, you can't see much from them photos :(

Need to take some more but the current lighting and my dodgy smartphone camera don't go together very well

CMStorm Rapid is now logo free on the case body, and they are including replacement win keys as well. A nice move.
Instead of getting a separate numpad, why not keep it on the board? You don't even have to give up on a more compact keyboard either if you get a Plum96.

The cm storm looks good, and £70 is a lot better than £120 for the filco. I'd prefer a smaller keyboard as my desk at home is a bit narrow, and so there isn't much room for the mouse with a full size keyboard.

Not yet, but it is on my list. I keep getting sidetracked with vintage Cherry stuff as usual.

I'm sick of not getting keycaps in the post. Just when I was getting used to it too! :thumb:

I shipped a package from Wisconsin to Minnesota in a day using the cheapest shipping via USPS. I've also shipped from Wisconsin to Sweden in about 4-5 days also via USPS.

Not bad if you ask me brocookie

Of course it is ok within the US, same with Royal Mail in the UK. USPS international is totally random!

Right, just got my new mechanical keyboard that has red switches. I thought i might now take this opportunity to get better at typing generally and really try and get the most out of using a mechanical keyboard.

So, whose got some tips for learning to type correctly? and some general tips of typing on a mechanical keyboard?

I used a website that teaches you how to touch type, I will look type it later on tonight when back at a PC.

My first tip would be to try to use your pinky finger for A, makes such a difference!
