Are 'WASD' the keys you use most often at work? (Mostly used, I'm sure, to type the name of your favourite artist from the 1990s, 'aswad'.)

 

Correct, I have written an on-screen keyboard program, where you navigate the virtual keys using WASD to move up, left, down or right, and activate the keys by pressing space.

I have desoldered all the other switches on the board so they don't do anything. I'm a trailblazer, you'll all be doing it soon

 

I do better than that. As they used to do on Going Live on a Saturday morning, I telephone one of my colleagues and say 'up', 'down', 'left', 'right' or 'fire' as they move around a life-sized keyboard on the ground. I've typed this by doing just that. It's brilliant.

Started assembling my Ergodox... But can't find my solder (to solder the switches on -- I did the smd's etc. in the lab at Uni), so can't finish it yet (I'll be picking some up at the weekend).

I'm not convinced by the Blue switches though, they feel a bit "thin"/"tinny" compared to my Unicomp, although I've only given them a few presses so far so maybe I'm just juding too early.

 

They are quite light - better with black springs, which makes ghetto greens. I am not too fond of blues in their stock form. Clear springs with blues is typing nirvana

 

Stock blues are pretty much my least favourite switch... Having tried blues with clear springs (we'll have to come up with a name for that - my suggestion is super blues) I'd have to agree that they are nice - looking forward to trying them on a whole board.

 

Pale blues? blue + clear = lighter blue, but they're not lighter in a touch-sense!

 

Sorry to be pedantic Sam, but blue + clear = the same shade of blue

We all know that the correct name should be Cherry MX Blears.

Now. Pedant hat firmly applied. You'll note that clears aren't actually transparent, but translucent, with an almost frosted appearance. Therefore, combining them with a blue switch would result in a paler, almost translucent blue switch. Ergo my statement is correct

PS Who would want to type on Hazel Blears?! Ha!

I invited such pedantry knowing full well that it would be applied. However, I'm going to stick to the linguistic issue at hand. The word clear, by definition, means tranparent. I'm going to assume for the sake of my pedantry that the inside of the Cherry MX Clear slider is in fact crystal clear, and the frosting effect is generated by lightly texturing the surface, just to confuse amateurs.

Ergo melting both down, blending and remoulding the plastics would result in a plastic of purest pink.

 

I was going to suggest Clear Blue, but I think that's a pregnancy test...

BTW, how does a blue switch with a black spring beget green?

 

Oh, the irony...

 

Because there are actually switches that are green which are clicky like blues but the weight of mx blacks (most people refer to blue switches with black springs in as ghetto greens)
