Never played 2004 much, I remember it from the original:

Ah, I was never a fan of UT. My antipathy towards online deathmatch-type free-for-alls was evident even back then*.

Sorry for the multi-post, although I see it's spawned some conversation. In my defence all three were a good while apart, it's just you guys had failed to post anything in between :p

overly expensive? you obviously don't know/appreciate the cost of some custom keyboards haha. Buy a keyboard just to pinch the fancy switches off it? Cheap.

Plus, I'm fairly sure you can fill the through hole LED holes with solder and then mount 0804 smd LEDs to those ghetto pads and thus use the new clear switch bodies on any LED keyboard and still have a light up keyboard.

broaden your horizons remember we on a modding forum :D

Plus - retrofitting smd leds to a hole through board makes changing the switches (assuming there is no plate support to pop the top) easier, and if you have a plate that supports swaps you also wouldn't have to drill out the switch top.

I now have (my very clean) mitts on a board with MX Blears on it which I am borrowing from the nice Mr. Margon. They are good switches!

I also met Margon in person!

I know/appreciate the cost of custom keyboard just fine, thank you. My point was that taking the Cherry MX RGB Red switches, for example, off a keyboard and placing them on a keyboard that previously had Cherry MX Red switches gains you nothing: the keyboard looks and feels exactly the same as it did before. You've just spent money for absolutely no reason. The Cherry MX RGB switches only do anything when there's an LED underneath them.

Not quite sure what you mean, here. Do you mean you could modify an existing keyboard designed for through-hole LEDs in order to use it with SMT LEDs and Cherry MX RGB switches? You almost certainly could, although I would imagine it depends on where the through-hole LED was positioned compared to where the SMT LED needs to be positioned in order for the MX RGB to work properly. That, however, is vastly different to the originally-suggested "take the switches out of the existing board and stick 'em on a different board" plan.

Hi. I'm Gareth Halfacree. I write the four-page (five-page from next issue) Hobby Tech column in Custom PC Magazine each month, and I've been a member of this here 'modding forum' (actually, you're in the Hardware sub-forum, but I'll let that slide) since 2007. We clearly haven't met.

It actually, if anything, detracts from the original function of the switch as you gain, for all intents and purposes, a useless lens where previously were purpose positioned holes for a hole through LED :) BUT - some people, pay large sums of money to have clear switch housing clones made out in asia - these RGB switches, are cherry official clear switch housings, which have cherry marked on them, which means regardless of your illumination wants/desires you can have:

With all your switch housings cherry branded - which, even while no one can see it, means A LOT to the people it means a lot to.

They will be in the same place, there isn't really anywhere else they could go - The lens on the RGB switches from what I gather and from everything I have read sits exactly where the holes for the through hole LEDs currently are.

You are indeed, a man who I admire and who's words I normally don't tire of reading :) Collector of vintage machines and a man who desires to have mirrors on his keyboard - nothing short of utmost respect for that! We haven't, which makes me sad :(

2 for 2 times no Hat - though I even had a hat with me today but wasn't wearing it when I saw sam a couple of hours ago.

No hat?! Are you sure it was Mr Margon you met and not a Margon-a-like?

Finished floss modding my SSK and it's very nice - quieter than before and slightly heavier keypresses are needed but a huge improvement in my book... I did like the feel slightly better before, however the pinging was enough to drive me (and my missus) to distraction...

    Edit:

I will get some better photos of my stuff soon... On that note, has anyone here tried a light tent for photographing things?

Good Lord, that SSK looks brilliant.

I've just completely changed my mind and re-done my Honeywell GB order to be ANSI only; I'm keeping the G80-3494 as I actually really like it, and I've ordered an ANSI Poker II with reds from shrop, paid for by the amount of stuff I've cut from my GB order.

So, that means as well as my Ducky I have a Cherry G80-8937LSDGB for sale (aka G80-8113). There was some interest here when I picked it up, not sure whether to sell caps/switches seperately or as a whole board?

    Is a Skidata worth £72?

I'm thinking about trying clears on a whole board.

Clears and what we decided must be lasered PBT caps. Very nicely lasered, actually. ISO layout, partly programmable with working magstripe card reader.

Yslen - I could be tempted by that cherry board and caps...

I've got a 3494. It's pretty good, just annoying it's the stepped caps lock!

Something else to go on the feature list of the board with clears - it doesn't have a stepped caps lock.

Yeah I actually really like the 3494, and the honeywell groupbuy has options for stepped caps lock keys, so it's not a huge issue for me at the moment.

Edit: The PBT caps look good on a black keyboard, though as you can see there are a couple of profile flaws. The delete and page down keys are R1, as is the up arrow.
