So myself personally, i use windows media player, but it's a huge resource hog. I was wondering if someone could suggest any free media players such as winamp that aren't so resource dependent, gaming with media player gives me a bit of lag, and i love my music so i want to find an alternative player to use. Thanks in advance
Well you said it yourself: Winamp If you want a good low resource performer I'd definitely recommend foobar2000 which is excellent.
thanks for the quick reply, i think i'll give winamp a shot, used it in the past, but i was soo used to windows media player, i could never get used to it...
So i downloaded and installed winamp and it uses about 2500 less K than media player and switches songs faster and is fairly simple to use. The one thing i wished is it had a bar type thing when minimized like itunes and windows media player, though it lacks that, it is faster at everything else so i'm happy. Also, it only seems to cause lag in counterstrike source, not call of duty 4. I figured it would be worse in CoD4 with media player, but it ran fine so who knows. I'm still going to keep using winamp.
I love foobar2000, but for your sanity use the columns ui plugin. And get the replay gain data for all your tracks so the volume is constant
ooo you can make winamp hide if you turn auto dock on and put the main window in "window shade" mode, then all you have to do is set the required window size and drag the window to the edge of the screen. If you keep "always on top" turn on you get this effect. My normal desktop Winamp visible I also have the medial library to appear and disappear with a hot key so that its always accessible but takes up no valuable real estate when not needed.
Not quite the same but have you tried in winshade yet (the T button top right) i run winamp set always on top like this, it fits perfectly inside the title bar of any window and takes one click to pull it back to full mode to change a playlist. Like that ^^
I'll do that tonight, but just put it above my toolbar since i always have tons of apps open. And i have a g15 keyboard so i have my media keys to switch between songs. Thanks for the info.
Seems strange for you to be getting CS:S lag, even with winamp. What drive are your songs on? If they're the same as your OS drive, that could be a source of lag. What about your RAM usage? What's going on there? Just seems really weird to me tbh.
The thing is, i only run windows live messenger, xfire, steam, teamspeak, and coretemp running when i'm gaming. It runs fine but as soon as windows media player comes on and its a custom map it gets a bit choppy, but the stock maps work fine. If i don't have media player on, i get nothing at all.
