I'm getting a little worried that my preferred memory for my new rig (not bought anything yet, but I've finalised my wish list ) won't be compatible. I'm looking to get the ASUS P5N32-E SLi PLUS mobo and 4GB of OCZ Vista Upgrade RAM. What are people's gut feelings about this combination? Has anyone got them and if so, how easy was it to get them to talk to each other? TIA Andy
check the ocz forums - they tested a lot of the memory on the striker (uses the 680i, the p5n32 they used is the 650i chipset and you need to be careful as to which p5n32 you buy)
Wow! Thanks for the quick reply. I hadn't noticed that OCZ had any forums (how blind am I???). I'll have a look there. Thanks! Andy
In fact, if you remove the white label stuck between the pci slots, your see that the board has "STRIKER" printed onto the board. As for the Ram with that board, please be sure to check whatever ram you decide to get, is on the QVL list before ordering. It has been noted that the 680i chipset can have problems with 4x 1gb @800mhz ram. On my own pc I was fortunate enough to have everything including the 4 sticks of ram just work out the box (using corsair dominator pc2-6400c), as it should be, using the same ram and same board for a freinds pc build, this was not the case, and found the only way to get the 4 sticks working was to boot with 2 sticks first, increase the voltages for the ram to 2.0-2.1v and the northbrdige to 1.4-1.45v, save and then install the other extra 2 sticks. By all means try with 4 sticks first, just if it dont boot, then try the voltage increase trick. Despite this board having compatability issues with ram, it is a nice featured board of which has proven to me to be very stable too, with large scope for overclocking from what I read, so long as you stick to ram listed in the QVL list, you should be ok.
Thanks D! The ram is actually 2x2GB sticks, just so I can increase the memory in the future. I'll be getting it in the next month or so (after we've moved house and I can see how much, if any, money we've got left after paying the estate agents and solicitors!) I'll keep you updated on my progress. Andy
That's a great tip. I've had huge problems with my 4x 1gb RAM sticks (A-DATA 1024MB DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz), and I just can't get it to work. I had to remove two just to get windows to install without Bluescreen. Then I added the other two, and I'm getting instant crashes before windows even launched. Removed one, and it seems to be stable again (just reinstalled everything AGAIN - the system is entirely new). As soon as I add the last one, crashes, crashes, crashes. Going to try to.. umm.. well try your tip. Only thing is that I don't have the know-how. Going to poke around the BIOS and see if I can find the obvious label. I'll check back if I get it working. Point me in the right direction? Edit: After just a minute or two poking around, I found the "Overvoltage" setting in "Extreme Tweaking". I set memory overvoltage and NB overvoltage to what you suggested, but it didn't help. Any other suggestions? I'm afraid to overvoltage further (for no specific reason other than "I have no idea what I may fry here") and I'd appreciate any tips.
Vista has a bug installing with 4gb of ram. You have to install with 2gb, apply a hotfix, and then fit the other 2gb. As for your ram issues, it sounds like a dodgy stick. Have you tried them all separately? (it could also just be crap ram...)
Unfortunately I am not aware of any other such tricks, and im certainly not going to advise you to increase the voltages any further at risk of frying something. Just checking the QVL list for the P5N32-E SLI board, it lists two supported types of ram @800mhz from A-DATA, a 512mb stick and a 1024mb stick, of which it states that the board will support 4x 512mb stick, but will only support 2x 1024mb sticks running dual channel. This model of 1024mb stick of ram (below) from A-DATA appears to be the only 1024mb stick supported by the P5N32-E SLI board. 1024MB A-DATA AD29608A8A-25EG DS M20AD6G3I4170G1E53 Can you please confirm exactly which version of the P5N32 board your using and the model of them ram in use? You may find the list of supported ram types for the P5N32-E SLI board here. Again once you have confirmed which board and ram in use, then we may be able to assist slightly better. Oh and er, welcome to the forums
