Greetings, I hope you can help me

    Core2duo e6320
    DFI 965P infinity-s
    Geil 2x1GB pc6400 (4-4-4-12)
    ECS 8800GTS 320MB
    Corsair HX520W
    Windows Vista 64bit (SP1)

Above specs have been working 100% for 2yrs. The problem is attempting to add Corsair XMS2 2x1GB pc6400 (4-4-4-12) so that I have 4GB of memory. The computer gets stuck at the part where it counts the memory or makes long beeps or continuously cycles on and off.

I have updated my BIOS, reset the BIOS, reset the CMOS, used the bios to alter memory speeds (533 - 800), timings, memory voltages (upto 2.2), increased NB voltages and tweaked other bios settings but they didn't help. I thought it was faulty memory so I ordered a new pair of the same type but I have the same problem.

The computer can boot with 1GB of XMS2 on its own but not 2GB, I can rarely get 3GB (2 corsair 1 geil, vice versa) to boot, but never 4GB.

So to clarify; I have 4x1GB XMS2 and 2x1GB Geil. I can't get the computer to start windows with any combination of 4 memory modules in different ways except my original Geils.

Hmm. Have you looked up "Dual Channel setups" in your mobo manual? It might help by pairing it so DDR setup 1 is your Geil, and DDR setup 2 is your Corsair. How this is setup varies across mobos. On the other hand, your mobo could just need replacing, with a newer P35, X38, or something. That chipset is a little old.

Yeah I've tried all possible combinations and settings but it still doesn't work. I will buy a more recent motherboard, thanks for the advice.

    Hey,

I'm back again and even more confused.

I bought a new motherboard - a Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L - and tried my new memory in it but I still have the same problem.

I have 4x1GB Corsair XMS2 that will not make it to the BIOS. I have repeated all troubleshooting steps from my first post including increasing voltages to the recommended 2.1v. I can still only ever get 1 Corsair module to boot. I have also updated the bios to the latest (non-beta) revision.

The reason I have acquired 4 memory modules is a long story but it's important to state that two of these modules are from scan.co.uk and the other two are from novatech.co.uk . Do you think it's possible that all four modules are faulty? I ask this because I can use other memory modules of different brands and they work OK but this new memory refuses to work in both new and old mobos.

I am pleased with my new motherboard however. :thumb:

I don't think that all 4 modules are faulty. It's a long shot. I think maybe that there's some incompatibility somehow with the board, or special configuration that needs to be done in the bios for the RAM.

Unfortunately, I'm not up on XMS2 ram, or that board, and I'm feeling lazy... so I'd suggest more checking on those via google, or manufacturer's tech support forums. Maybe there's some known issues with the quality of that module model?
    Good luck.
