Just got my rotozip. I have not really done all that much modding yet but am keen to get into it - the cost of all the tools you need (well I think I need) has been putting me off.

I'm wondering whether to keep it or not as I thought the spiral saw would cut metal and I don't have a dremel yet - to cut round corners.

I'm sure I read somewhere about there being bits for the roto (not made by zip) that'd cut through metal.... Does anybody know about these?

You dont need a dremel for that. I am also a beginner modder and i have bought a dremel for £70 BUT i have also bought some Stanley Cutters from B&Q. There are some in the link below but these are their own make. But these cut through the side of your case with ease and it still gives a great finish.

I seem remember MDK (I think it was) emailing RotoZip and them replying saying that there was only one bit which could cut metal and that it could only cut through thin aluminium (ie pretty soft).... don't know about unofficial bits though.

Dead right Dex hers the reply

I havn't really looked into other pieces as such as i went to B&Q with a crisp £10 note thinking could get a new cutting thing for it and then leaving as the price was infact £35 for some new cutting bits :( and these were home brand :waah: am off to a stupidly huge B&Q this weekend.

The cutters cks_cropper linked are basically just tin snips. They do the job, but you'll find it really tough to get a clean cut that doesn't warp the metal.
    A nibbler would be better.

But for the rotozip, £7.99 for a pack of 5 sabrecut bits, and here's the general rotozip and accessories.

That's a toolbank store, I generally find them OK for tools and stuff. Here's the toolbank site so you can find your local store.

    :D

Yes they are only tin snips. Although they do the job quite well i find. It only warps the bit that you are cutting out which is good because you dont use that anyways.

try one of the high speed horizontal metal cutters from dremel in it...it should have more than enough torque to handle it...if ure trying to round corners...consider an angle grinder.

RotoZip has an attachment the turns it into a 90 degree angled cut-off wheel and some polishing deal as well... It uses 3-3.5" (don't remember which) re-enforced cut off wheels. They work quite well for long straight cuts, The thickest i've cut with it so far is 1/4" steel angle iron and some 3/4" round stock. It was cheaper than a chop saw for the few times i've needed it.

I can dig it up out in the shop for a pic if needed.

I use a rotozip and I use it over my dremel hardcore, especially for cutting. In the pack I got it only came with one metal cuttign disc but that thing tore through lotsa different types of metal. When it needed replaced I just went to the store and got the highest RPM normal one I coudl buy. Just turn the rotozip down a bit and it's more then fine...:D
